Tips and Tricks on How to Prepare For a Job Interview

Job interviews can be nerve-wracking, especially if it’s your first time as a graduate with the opportunity of getting a career in your desired field. The following are a few general tips on how to prepare yourself for an interview without any or little faults.

  1. Be prepared

    Always prepare yourself ahead of time and compile as much knowledge as you can about yourself and the company. Know your strengths, weaknesses and accomplishments that you’ve done in the past; this will help your potential employer know how confident and comfortable you are about yourself.
  2. Research the company

    Another thing you should be prepared with is to know the company and find out as much information as you can about your potential employer. Be prepared to talk about the company and why you want to work there. Knowing the company and its values will show that you have put in effort and are a hardworking person.
  3. Arrive 15-30 minutes early

    Being punctual is the basic clue to your attitude and behaviour in the work place and tardiness would not be tolerated. Allow yourself to have plenty of time before and after the interview to prepare yourself mentally without having to rush anything.
  4. Make a good first impression

    You can either make or break your interview in the first five minutes. First impressions, whether positive or negative will affect the overall of your interview. The dos and don’ts to making a good first impression it to appear friendly and outgoing, giving positive reactions and body language, and be attentive to your interviewer. What not to do at an interview is to be arrogant or cocky and not to bad mouth your past positions, companies or employers.
  5. Be self-confident

    Having too much confidence can come off to arrogance but it doesn’t hurt to be confident about yourself, your achievements and why you would fit the position of the job interview. Discuss your accomplishments and your worth; what you have done in the past that could be of advantage in the position, which demonstrates proactive attitude.
  6. Remain involved and interested

    Interviews that take place with an active two-way conversation is the most effective as it helps get you involved and state your interests in the position as well and have questions prepared to ask the interviewer as well to show initiative and ambition. However, don’t interrupt your interviewer and remember it is still a professional job interview.

Job Interview Tips

Other than following those steps, there are also a few tips that would help you through the interview as well, including:

  • Have a detailed understanding of what you’re getting yourself into with the position description, the team environment and the organisation
  • Know the location and time of the interview, the interviewer’s full name and correct pronunciation
  • Spend your time before the interview to review your CV and experiences and how it is relevant to the position as well as specifying examples and demonstrating your ability for the job
  • Prepare questions that you will ask during the interview

Asking questions shows that you’re interested in the position as well as give you valuable information. These are a few questions that you should ask at the end of every job interview:

  • “What have past employees done to succeed in this role?”
    This questions helps give you an idea of how the company measures success and reach your goal if you were to start working there.
  • “How has this position evolved?”
    This questions lets you know if the job is a dead end or not, if the position has evolved it means that the company is growing.
  • Can you give me examples of how I would collaborate with my manager?”
    The answer to this question will let you know how the staff members are used and if you can showcase your skills to the manager
  • “What are the first priorities for this position?”
    Knowing the first priorities in the position that you are applying for informs you on what you should focus on if you were to get the job and give out a good impression.
  • “What are the challenges of this position?”
    There will always be challenges in the work place, and this question will help you know what you will be facing down the road. If the interviewer does not list any challenges, you may suspect something suspicious.
  • “Do you have any hesitations about my qualifications?”
    This shows the interviewer that you are comfortable with talking about your weaknesses and what you’re not good at to help you develop your skills.
