The Data Graduate stream, led by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), is recruiting for over 150 data graduate roles for over 20 Australian Public Service (APS) agencies.
What will I do as an Australian Government Data Graduate?
Data roles are varied and support evidence-based, informed decision making, and work across all aspects of government such as policy development, research, program management and service delivery. Roles cover the full data lifecycle including survey and questionnaire development, research, data acquisition, data engineering and data analysis, as well as more specialised streams such as data science, methodology, geospatial analysis and data management.
There are various data roles such as data acquisition officers, methodologists, data engineering, researchers, geospatial analysts, data consultants. Two of the most in demand roles are:
Data Analysts lead the design, analysis and delivery of relevant, trusted and objective statistics and data-related insights. They assist in designing and testing data collection instruments such as questionnaires and forms to ensure the data specification and solutions are fit for purpose. They analyse data to discover relationships between data items and draw findings, using their judgement and real world insights. They tell the story behind the data in an engaging and meaningful way.
Data Scientists are responsible for discovering, experimenting with, wrangling data and leading the use of new data sources, methods and products to meet the changing information needs of customers across governments, business and the community. Data Scientists play an important role in building their organisation’s capacity to take advantage of opportunities, such as advances in technology, big data, and use of administrative information for statistical purposes.
As a 2022 Data Graduate, you have the opportunity be part of the Data Graduate Network as well as become a member of the APS Data Professional stream. You will have access to events, forums and webinars with industry experts that will help build skills and advance your career.

We are looking for highly motivated graduates from a wide array of disciplines and life experiences, who want to play a part in shaping Australia’s future and informing the decision making process.
There are no requirements for any particular degrees or disciplines though people who have undertaken data subjects are more likely to be successful. The types of backgrounds of our graduates are from include analytics, actuarial studies, business, commerce, computer science, data management, data science or mining, demography, economics, econometrics, engineering, finance, mathematics or mathematical modelling, machine learning, psychology, risk and intelligence analysis, social sciences and statistics.
To be eligible to apply for the 2022 Australian Government Data Graduate Recruitment, you must:
- be an Australian citizen by 30 June 2021
- have completed at least an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 qualification (a Bachelor degree), equivalent, or higher equivalent by 31 December 2021
- have completed your most recent degree no more than 5 years ago on the date you lodge your application
- be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance once accepted onto the program when required
- be willing to undergo any Police, character, health or other checks required.
Successful applicants will be placed in a merit pool that will be considered by APS & Commonwealth entities.
