About CUB

Carlton & United Breweries

At Carlton & United Breweries, we are known for our iconic brands: Victoria Bitter, Great Northern Brewing co, Carlton Dry… our beers are known across the country. However, for our customers and our consumers, we offer so much more.

We are the Lexington Hill Cocktail Club. We are Strongbow Cider. We are Riot Wines Co. We are CUB, and we are bigger than just a brewery. We have built a portfolio that extends to every occasion and every Australian.

Our business employs over 1,300 people across Australia, in roles that range from manufacturing to advertising - so you can always be sure that there is a place for you in our family. Moreover, we work hard to ensure that each and every one of our people can be proud to work at CUB.

Part of this pride stems from our commitment to building a better world. This dream is embedded into every action we take and is the foundation of our long-term strategy. Across the country, we are brewing by 100% purchased renewable energy. You can learn more about the work we are doing to create a better world here.

We are always looking for ways to dream big and reach new heights; our innovative ideas ensure we leave a legacy that we can be proud of. Every day we are building new brands, creating new business, and strengthening our community partnerships.

However, we understand that each person is unique in how they achieve their best results. That is why we encourage flexible working at CUB. Both during the hiring process as well as during employment, we urge all our people to hold open and honest communications about how we can best cater a working experience to suit them.

We support all people at CUB. We host various networks aimed at creating a more diverse and welcoming company. These include the Amber League and Pride At CUB, networks that respectively support our female and LGBT+ colleagues; whilst also educating the broader business on the importance of diversity. Ensuring that all our employees feel safe and free to be themselves will always be our priority.

We believe in a meritocracy at CUB, where the work you do is what matters - not how you went about doing it.

The bold determine the future…. And at CUB; we are bold.

We will shape the future.

Better World

Carlton & United Breweries

At CUB, we dream of creating a better world and work hard to ensure that this dream is present in everything we do. This dream unites us. It’s what brings us together as a company and as a people.

Sustainability

As a leader in Australia’s FMCG industry, we believe it is our duty to build sustainable practises into every aspect of our supply chain.

We have pledged that 100% of our products will be packaged in materials that are returnable or made from majority-recycled content by 2025. We have already begun to make great strides with this, as we discontinued plastic ring packaging for all our cans.

Our breweries need water to produce the beverages that Australia loves. With this in mind, we are committed to protecting Australia’s water. Across the company, we are implementing strategies and infrastructure that reduces our water usage and improves efficiency. Today, our Yatala brewery in Queensland is a world leader in water efficiency and is home to a world-class Water Reclamation Facility.

Communities

We are more than just a leader in our industry; we believe that we are leaders in the community. We owe it to our customers and consumers to give back to the community that gives so much to us.

Beginning in 2018, we launched a new program to provide safe drinking water to Australian’s suffering from natural disasters. We are able to mobilise our expertise in manufacturing and logistics to both package drinking water into cans and ensure that it is distributed to those in need. We have deployed this program numerous times since 2018, helping to counter the effects of floods, droughts and bushfires across the country.

With how tumultuous our countries climate can be, there are times where our communities can suffer from great tragedies. We feel that it is during these times that we must come together as a country and act. In 2018, we ran the ‘Let It Pour’ campaign, seeking to raise money and bring hope to Queensland during an extended drought period. During the campaign, we raised over $1 million, as we donated 1,000 kegs of Great Northern and $250,000. This campaign was repeated in 2019, to equal success. In early 2020, we began another campaign under the Victoria Bitter brand to help support our bushfire-stricken communities.

Smart Drinking

We love the all the beverages we make. Beers, ciders, cocktails and premixed – it’s our belief that we are making great drinks for every occasion. However, it is important to us that our beverages are drunk responsibly. We have a responsibility towards our communities and our country to ensure that we are encouraging a positive experience when drinking alcohol.

As part of our ongoing campaign to promote safe and responsibly drinking, we are proud to be a major contributor of DrinkWise Australia. DrinkWise Australia promotes generational change in the way Australians approach and consume alcohol through national information and education campaigns.

We are also ensuring that our portfolio of great beverages offers a wide range of options for every occasion. 25% of our sales now consists of mid, low and non-alcoholic options. Within this category is our ground-breaking non-alcoholic beer, Carlton Zero.

Health and Wellbeing

Carlton & United Breweries

Our biggest asset is our people. The work they do is integral to every aspect of our business, from brewing to sales. That is why it is so important to us that they are set up to succeed, both in business and in life.

One of our most successful policies regarding employee wellbeing is our flexible working arrangements. We understand that each person is unique in how they achieve their best results. Both during the hiring process as well as during employment, we urge all our people to hold open and honest communications about how we can best cater a working experience that suits them. This is just one aspect of our ‘How I Work’ policy.

We also offer all of our employees access to mental health support systems, including our employee assistance program (EAP) and other, internal support systems.

Our Graduates

Carlton & United Breweries

Monique

Monique Di Gregorio

“I really wanted to challenge and expose myself to new perspectives… I wanted a career where every day could be something different.”

Having completed the GMT program, I can honestly say that the experience was invaluable. I loved the balance that was struck between real, hands on work and professional development.

One of the most rewarding experiences of the year was seeing the results of my project having a positive impact on the business. I worked on the Pure Blonde Organic launch and seeing the billboards and radio ads I helped to execute out in public was such a rewarding feeling.

Ashleen

Ashleen Singh

“I loved how after the initial training, you’re straight into it. I felt really empowered from day one”

I was lucky enough to work on some really interesting projects across the brewery. One of these was focused on CUB’s Better World policies and reducing our carbon footprint. I loved being able to put my engineering background towards a really good cause.

What I enjoyed most about my year as an MT was being able to work across the entire process, from brewing to packaging to engineering. Learning how many inputs are going towards a single bottle of beer and being able to help optimise that process; that’s been so rewarding.

Lizzy

Lizzy Prosselkova

“I love engaging others in data and seeing the excitement on their faces as they see what is possible!”

Over the course of the year, I worked on projects across each of the functions, helping to optimise data collection and visualisation, and then teaching the teams how to best analyse it. It was really exciting being trusted to work with live business data and draw conclusions that were then taken on board by the teams.

I think my proudest moment of the year was forecasting our competitor pricing strategy – something that is going to make us more competitive across the entire Australian market and ensure that we are maximising our resources.

Mack

Mack Thomas

“The culture at CUB is definitely the biggest highlight. Everyone is super friendly and easy-going but are also some of the smartest people I’ve ever met.”

I initially applied for the program because I’m a big fan of the brands but I was quickly drawn into the work I was doing. CUB is making huge strides on the technology side of the business, and every day I am facing new challenges to work through… definitely wasn’t expecting to be given the reigns to such a degree this early on in my career.

I think what I’m most excited for in the future is the opportunity to do a stint on the supply side of things – I think it would be really cool development opportunity to see the production side of the business and apply my learnings from technology to a new function.

Emily

Emily Zhang

“I never expected to be working on such REAL projects as an intern – there’s a real feeling of trust and a belief that I can deliver from day one.”

Coming into the application for the internship, I was pretty daunted by the application process; interviews with senior leadership, timed case studies… it was a really scary prospect! But coming up to the end of the internship, it was 100% worth it.

Working at CUB has been a total eye opener. The amount of effort and consideration that goes into each hire clearly pays off – the people are without a doubt CUB’s best asset. Not the office, not the work, not even the beer. The people and culture here are simply incredible.

Diversity & Inclusion

Diversity diversity icon

Carlton & United Breweries

At CUB, we make beverages for a diverse Australia. Our portfolio extends to all peoples and to all situations. The diversity of our portfolio reflects a diversity in our country; something that we are proud to a part of.

We are proud of the environment that we foster. A diversity of ideas, a diversity of culture, and most importantly, a diversity of people. This is what we strive for. Making sure our employees feel safe and free to be themselves is the most important aspect of our business.

We run a host of different initiatives that aim to bolster our diversity and offer support to the people of CUB. Examples of this are the employee run organisations that offer support and networking opportunities to various minorities; these include the Amber League and Pride At CUB, networks that support our female and LGBT+ colleagues respectively. We also recognise and celebrate events from all religions, cultures and backgrounds.

For what makes us different makes us stronger. Our differences bind us as we find the strengths in others compliment a weakness within ourselves.

Gender Equality

Equal opportunities programs diversity icon

Carlton & United Breweries

At CUB, we are proud of the diversity of our people and of our products. We believe that for any company to truly succeed, it must be built with a foundation that includes all people. This means creating a fair and equal workplace for women – and making sure that equality is front of mind in everything that we do.

True equality for women is about creating an environment that empowers women towards their best selves. It is a total shift of the traditional workplace; to allow women to work in a way that does not require them to sacrifice their career ambitions in the face of personal responsibilities that fall disproportionally their shoulders.

To help guide us towards such change, CUB hosts the Amber League; a network to support women in the workplace. The Amber League hosts a range of activities and events to promote female empowerment, whilst also educating the wider business on the importance of gender equality.

Some highlights from 2019 include a networking event and presentation with Business Chicks founder, Emma Isaacs; discussing the challenges of being a woman in the workplace and the importance of creating a strong network. The Amber League also held a competition to brew a personalised beer in our micro-brewery. The winner, Carla Fowler, worked end to end in the brewery to create a Turkish Delight inspired brew; something that was hugely popular amongst her colleagues across the business.

We are also proud of our ‘How I Work’ policy. This allows for flexible working arrangements, so as to create an environment that allows each and every person to thrive; regardless of their chosen personal or family commitments.

We are dreamers at CUB, are we are working hard to ensure that equality is present throughout our business; because this dream shapes us as a company and as a people.

LGBT+ Support

Carlton & United Breweries

At CUB, we are continuing our efforts to promote a safe and welcoming experience within our company. We are proud to promote true diversity; a diversity of ideas, of culture, and most importantly, of people. Everybody deserves the right to be able to be themselves at work. They shouldn’t have to hide what makes them different; but rather they should be able to showcase it.

At CUB, we host Pride at CUB, a network that supports our LGBT+ colleagues by offering networking and development opportunities, whilst also educating the broader business. We also conduct proactive training sessions with our employees to build awareness of the discrimination that is experienced every day.

For the second year running, CUB, under the Yak Breweries brand, are proud to be sponsoring the Sydney Mardi Gras parade. During this event, we invite employees from across the country to march and show their pride in the parade.

We are committed to a diversity of people and of ideas at CUB, and we work tirelessly to ensure that everyone feels free and safe to be themselves at work.

Disability Support

Disability programs diversity icon

Carlton & United Breweries

At CUB, we are introducing new ways of working that help assist our employees with disabilities and make our company a more inclusive place to work. This is all new for us, so to lead the way, we have founded the CAN – CUB Ability Network.

CAN has been working hard to ensure that we are making CUB an accessible place to work for all peoples. This has included working closely with the Australian Network on Disability and running workshops to first determine the issues that employees with disabilities are frequently forced to face, and then outlining solutions that we as a company can implement.

Some of the immediate changes and policies that have been implemented to assist our people include motorised standing desks – helping create a workspace that can be fitted to each persons desired specifications. We are also keen observers of flexible working – allowing our people to cater their working experience to suit them.

There is more work to be done in this area, but we are excited to continue moving forward and creating a workplace that is both accessible and welcoming to all people.
