Generalist Job Stream

The Generalist stream gives graduates a thorough understanding of what Defence does, and the opportunities it offers.

  • Tailored suite of training that covers leadership, technical, communication, departmental and general skills, needed in the Australian Public Service
  • On-the-job and off-the-job training along with other development activities
  • Senior Officer Briefing series where you will meet and hear from a range of our Senior Leaders, including the Secretary, Chief of the Defence Force and Service Chiefs (Navy, Air Force and Army)
  • Week-long Study Tour of military establishments and Defence facilities outside of Canberra; and
  • In each rotation you will have real tasks and responsibilities, and be fully integrated into the work team to make sure you contribute to your full potential

Finance Job Stream

Defence Finance Graduates will contribute to decision making and providing advice on significant parts of the Defence Budget.

  • Undertaking a tailored suite of training that covers leadership, technical, operational, departmental and general skills needed in the Australian Public Service.
  • Participating in a three day familiarisation tour of Australian Defence Force establishments across Australia;
  • Undertaking real tasks and responsibilities which are fully integrated into the work team;
  • Participating in networking opportunities; and
  • Contributing to building, developing and sustaining the Australian Defence Organisation’s ‘finance capability’.

Information and Communication Technology Job Stream

The Chief Information Officer Group (CIOG), within the Department of Defence, is responsible for ensuring that Defence has a dependable, secure and integrated Single Information Environment (SIE) to support Defence business and military operations.

  • On-the-job training and mentorship from leading ICT professionals from Australian Public Service, Australian Defence Force and Defence Industry ICT;
  • Three rotations in various ICT areas contributing directly to Defence capability;
  • A familiarisation tour of Australian Defence Force establishments outside of Canberra; and
  • An ongoing position on completion of rotations

Estate and Infrastructure Job Stream

Work in partnership with contracted, specialist providers to deliver essential services to bases and ADF personnel around the nation.

  • Tailored suite of training that covers leadership, technical, departmental and general skills needed in the Australian Public Service
  • On-the-job and off-the-job training, including week-long study tour of Defence facilities outside of Canberra
  • In each rotation you will gain vast exposure to the Defence enterprise through meaningful work, such as engaging and managing contractor teams for projects involving aircraft hangers, ship repair facilities, military training facilities, as well as specialised research and technical facilities
  • Work in partnership with contracted, specialist providers to deliver essential services to bases and ADF personnel around the nation.

Human Resources Job Stream

Human Resources stream graduates contribute to building, developing and sustaining Australian Defence Organisation’s “people capability”.

  • Tailored suite of training that covers leadership, technical, departmental and general skills, needed in the Australian Public Service
  • On-the-job and off-the-job training, including week-long Study Tour of Defence facilities outside of Canberra
  • In each rotation you will have real tasks and responsibilities, and be fully integrated into the work team to make sure you contribute to your full potential.

Engineering Job Stream

Your will work on complex projects that are of national significance and are in direct support of the Australian Defence force.

  • On-the-job and off-the-job learning and development to achieve industry-based professional recognition. This includes supporting you to complete Engineers Australia accreditation competencies.
  • Funded Engineers Australia membership
  • An opportunity to complete an industry graduate rotation external to Defence
  • Opportunity to build on the skills you learned at university
  • Emphasis on work-life balance
  • Your will work on complex projects that are of national significance and are in direct support of the Australian Defence force
  • Advancement to APS 5 level on successful completion of the Capability Pathway
  • Opportunities to become a professional Engineer through certification with an appropriate peak body

Maritime Engineering and Naval Construction job stream (Future Submarines and Ships)

You will work on complex projects that are of national significance and are in direct support of the Australian Navy

  • On-the-job and off-the-job learning and development to achieve industry-based professional recognition. This includes supporting you to complete Engineers Australia accreditation competencies.

Commercial Job Stream

Defence undertakes projects of national significance, which are un-paralleled in their size, scope, cost, timescale, risk profile and level of technological complexity.

Commercial Stream Graduates will have opportunities to work on some of Australia’s most complex and challenging commercial activities over three exciting rotations. This will include:

  • Developing and implementing innovative commercial strategies for the acquisition or sustainment of major capital equipment and non-materiel procurements;
  • Liaising and engaging with Defence industry in support of procurement activities;
  • Preparing tender documentation for release to market;
  • Evaluation of tender submissions;
  • Negotiating contracts for simple and complex procurements;
  • Assessing the commercial allocation of liabilities and risks;
  • Support ongoing contract management activities; and
  • Helping to shape commercial procurement policy and contribute to Defence’s commercial framework.

Logistics Job Stream

  • Rotation specific training to provide you with the skills and knowledge to undertake rewarding, exciting and challenging work
  • Participation in DST Group’s mentoring program to help you expand your skills and knowledge from senior research staff
  • Experience applying your research skills to complex research problems that will contribute to Australia’s Defence and National Security
  • A three day familiarisation tour where you will visit Navy, Army and Air Force bases to meet Australian Defence Force members and interact with military equipment.

Defence Policy Job Stream

The Defence Policy Stream offers training and development opportunities to offer you a solid foundation for a fulfilling career in Defence’s Strategic Policy and Intelligence Group.

Work undertaken by Defence Policy Officers includes contribution to:

  • Policy development, strategic planning and advice to Government;
  • Development of strategic guidance for Defence, and to major reviews of defence policy and planning and military strategy;
  • Analysis and assessment of capability development proposals;
  • Defence industry engagement and innovation, including policy development and advice to Government on options for building Australia's defence industrial capability;
  • Development and maintenance of Defence's international relationships with allies and partners, including through facilitating senior international visits and managing Defence’s representation overseas; and
  • Informing Defence's participation in and contribution to whole-of-Government national security deliberations and decisions.

Defence Intelligence Organisation

Australian Geospatial - Intelligence Organisation

AGO’s intelligence officers research, analyse and report on a country or region or a specific thematic international issue to meet the requirements of customers ranging from government leaders to tactical users.
