Department of Education, Skills and Employment

Career Pathways

The graduate program provides diverse work placements that help graduates understand the core business of the department.

These are generalist placements which provide a good opportunity to build on understanding of the different areas across the department. In addition to generalist placements, the department offers career pathways in various streams such as legal, finance and data which provides graduates with a unique opportunity to gain experience and additional learning and development opportunities relevant to their chosen career. In addition to our career pathways, in 2021, DESE will also participate in various specialist APS graduate programs, these include:

APS Human Resource (HR) Graduate Development Program

If you have HR qualifications and are pursuing a HR career with the APS, you could be one of the first to benefit from this program.

As a HR professional in the APS, you will contribute to managing our most valuable asset – our people – and play a crucial role in shaping the future of the APS.

If you are interested in applying for a APS HR graduate position, visit the dedicated website at for more information, and apply just once to be considered for opportunities in both the Department of Education, Skills and Employment and other participating APS agencies.

APS Economist Stream

If you have the relevant qualifications, you can apply to the APS Economist Stream and be eligible for consideration for a wide range of opportunities to start your career as an Economist within the APS.

To apply for the APS Economist Stream you do not need to apply through the DESE application process, you can visit the Treasury website to apply or for more information.
