The opportunity 

Australian Border Force (ABF), Customs Group is looking for final and second-last year students to join our team. Internships are available in a range of dynamic areas across the Group which will allow you to gain on the job experience and explore pathways within the public service. 

Through this opportunity you will gain valuable work experience in a specialist environment and attain an understanding of the workings of Australia’s frontline border law enforcement agency and customs service. Furthermore, you will have the chance to gain insight into the broader Home Affairs portfolio. 

Who we are 

The ABF is an operationally independent body within the Home Affairs portfolio. The ABF Customs Group has a broad remit with responsibilities including: 

  • ensuring Australia's customs and border policy settings support the efficient movement of legitimate goods across the border while detecting and preventing the movement of prohibited goods; 
  • administering the collection of border revenue, regulated goods and supply chain risks, and undertaking customs and trade compliance activity; 
  • conducting special investigations to support the detection, deterrence, disruption and response to border threats relating to the movement of people and goods across the border that compromises our economy, prosperity and public safety, and 
  • leading Australia's whole of government response to modern slavery and human trafficking, including in respect of supply chains and criminal justice. 

What you will do 

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on diverse projects within various sections of Customs Group, including Strategic Capability, Trade Compliance, National Trade  Services, Australian Trusted Trader, Trade Risk and Planning and Tourist Refund Scheme. 

Placement into one of the above teams will be based on the candidates current study stream, skills and interests. You will work closely with the project teams and mentors, to undertake a range of duties which may include: 

  • Conducting research and data analysis to identify illicit and non-compliant behaviour. 
  • Assisting on intelligence gathering and recording to support operations. 
  • Analysing statistics and reporting on findings and trends in program delivery. 
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders including other government departments and industry. 
  • Drafting reports and policy/guidance documents. 
  • Providing administrative project support as required.

Applicants must be an Australian citizen and prepared to undertake and pass a security clearance process.
