Overview of our Graduate Program

Department of Home Affairs graduates will carry out work with real purpose. Our Graduate Development Program is unique - applying to work with us is the start of an amazing journey.

The program offers a variety of hands-on experiences with formal development opportunities over the duration of the 12 month program. Graduates experience various workplace rotations within the Department to build a diverse range of skills and knowledge, whilst working towards a Diploma in Government.

Our graduate program offers a breadth of interesting and challenging work, access to professional development, excellent employment conditions, support of various diversity networks, rewarding professional relationships, mentors and buddies as well as endless career opportunities and pathways.

Our graduates are supported by an orientation and induction program, a mentor to launch your career, access to a range of health and wellbeing programs, as well as a team of supervisors, mentors, and supporters to assist and guide you throughout the program.

At the conclusion of the program, high performing graduates will be given the opportunity to participate in an Advanced Graduate Program which offers further career progression and vocational specific development opportunities.

To work for us you must:

  • Have completed a minimum of an Australian recognised undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the last five years. You can apply while you are still studying, as long as you will have completed your last day of study by the time the program starts
  • Be an Australian citizen on or before 15 April 2019
  • Obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) clearance and Departmental Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC)
  • Relocate to Canberra.

Due to the suitability and assessment requirements, the recruitment process can take up to six months from the time your application is considered to an offer being made.
