We recruit a small number of graduates each year, and we are highly invested and very proud of their accomplishments. In recent years, our graduates have won numerous awards, and been selected to participate in further, highly competitive whole of Australian Public Service development programs.
During the last few years this has included:
- Winning the prestigious Whole of Government ICT Best Project Award.
- Winning the Australian Public Service Graduate Development Program Major Project Video Presentation Award.
- Speaking on the winning team of the APS Graduate Great Debate.
- Being selected to join the Parliament of Australia Graduate Program.
- Shortlisting for the Australian Public Service Graduate Development Program Outstanding Major Project Digital Media Clip Award.
In addition to our graduate’s achievements, our graduate program itself has been recognised for excellence, with DVA selected as one of Australia’s Top 75 Graduate Employers as voted by graduates.
Our program commences in February each year and begins with an extensive orientation. Over a series of weeks, you will be provided unique access to our senior executives and management who will introduce you to key aspects of the department and its’ business. You will also be provided with opportunities to network and to see first-hand some of the department’s commemorative work.
Mentoring and support
Graduate supervisors at DVA are carefully selected, and possess the leadership skills and knowledge required to support you throughout your graduate year (and beyond).
We also provide our graduates with ‘buddies’ (graduates from previous years) who will help you to transition into working life, navigate the department and working environment, and adjust to life in a new location.
Our graduates enter into a performance agreement with supervisors in each of their three business area rotations. This provides you with an opportunity to ask questions and talk with your supervisor to better understand what is expected, and your development needs and aspirations. Our performance feedback scheme is designed to help ensure you are on track and achieving your development and business goals
Generalist graduates: Australian Public Service (APS) Graduate Development Program
Graduates in our generalist stream participate in the APS Graduate Development Program. This includes around 13 days of face-to-face training, a major team project, and coaching sessions. Successful completion of the APS Graduate Development Program will enable interested graduates to articulate into higher degree programs at the Australian National University, the University of Canberra, and CPA Australia.
Graduates will also participate in whole of government graduate events, four of which are expected to be scheduled over the course of the year.
A range of internal DVA training is also available, including self-paced e-learning opportunities. Some of the available online courses are Financial Management, Information and Records Management, Rehabilitation and Compensation, Client Services and Interpersonal Skills.
Intra-Agency Network (IAN)
DVA offers its employees an opportunity to undertake a structured work placement of approximately one month duration in a different work area after the Graduate Program year.
DVA offers its employees generous study assistance and study leave should they desire to further their education after the Graduate Program year.
