2022 Graduate Program - Sydney

We are excited to announce that our Graduate Program for 2022 is expanding and we are offering a greater number of graduates positions than we ever have before. As part of our growth we are looking for graduates who would like to undertake one rotation in our Insurance, Property and/or Government teams within our Sydney Office. 

  • Insurance

  • HWL Ebsworth has one of the largest insurance claims and advisory teams in Australia, providing claims advice and assistance to major general insurers, specialist insurers, underwriting agents, reinsurers, life insurers, workers compensation insurers and brokers. We act for participants in both the Australian market and overseas market, including London-based insurers.

  • Our General Insurance team offers advice and representation across a diverse range of insurance products including in the areas of public liability, professional indemnity, directors & officers, property, industrial special risks. We also offer advice in respect of business interruption, energy, management liability, employment practices liability, work, health and safety and medical malpractice. We also have one of the most significant Life Insurance practices in Australia and our partners are recognised as amongst the country’s leading practitioners in life insurance claims.

  • Our Employers' Liability practice is spread across all of our offices, and is one of the largest providers of legal services to the workers compensation industry in Australia. We act for a variety of industry stakeholders,  including regulators, scheme agents/insurers, specialised insurers, employers, brokers and corporate self-insurers. We advise on claim strategies, policy and compliance issues and act in proceedings in all jurisdictions, including the Supreme and High Court. 

  • Property

  • The Property group have expertise in all areas of property development, acquisition and disposals, owners corporations and leasing.  The Group assists in residential, office, industrial and retail properties. As part of the team graduates will be able to get involved in large scale projects, national leasing portfolios and ground breaking transactions.

  • Commonwealth Government Commercial & Administrative Law

  • Working out of our Sydney office as part of the Canberra based Practice Groups we have an exciting opportunity for Graduates who have a particular interest in Government work.  These rotations will encompass Commercial work including procurement advice and legal services for large Government projects as well as hands on litigation experience for number of Government agencies.

We are looking for individuals with different strengths and attributes that will continue to add to our down to earth, no-fuss culture. Those who are self-motivated, keen to learn, have an ability to adapt to changing priorities and have excellent communication skills will succeed. 

Our Graduate Program:

We want you to assist with real, challenging, and high-profile matters from day one. We will give you the opportunity to interact with our high-profile clients much earlier in your legal career, this is made possible by having the lowest ratio of Solicitors to Partners than any other Australian law firm. 

Our carefully tailored Graduate Program will run for 12 months commencing in March 2022.  You will experience two rotations in different practice groups, one of which will be Insurance, Property and/or the Government team, and be supported to complete your PLT during the program, alongside a substantial cohort of peers.

What to expect from our Graduate Program:

  • A customised induction program that will assist in familiarising you with our systems, processes and give real insight into our practice groups and life at HWLE.
  • Real and rewarding training with extensive support from your supervising Partner and mentor. 
  • The chance to work with blue-chip clients that provide interesting work. 
  • Your practice groups will have you drafting, attending court, completing legal research, attending client meetings or attending settlements, in line with their regular daily activities. 
  • The opportunity to participate in feedback sessions with your supervising Partners to reflect on your development and receive real feedback to ensure you thrive. 
  • Seminars and workshops that give insight into our practice areas and help you develop invaluable skills.
  • Opportunities to attend social events and network with your fellow colleagues, from Graduates through to Partners of the Firm. 

Who can apply:

Applications are open to those who meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Finished your degree or will finish before March 2022;
  • Practical Legal Training (PLT) has not commenced or been completed;
  • Not yet admitted;
  • Australian Citizen or permanent resident.
