About the role

The NSW Aboriginal Cultural Advisor position is a newly created role within Lifestyle Solutions that will work along service delivery teams to ensure that Aboriginal Children and Young People receive Culturally Safe care and support.

The role of the NSW Aboriginal Cultural Advisor is to:

  • Contribute to the provision and quality of culturally sensitive and responsive services, and a culturally safe working environment through consultation and engagement with Lifestyle Solutions team members, Aboriginal Peoples and relevant Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO’s)
  • Continually support and refine cultural planning process
  • Provide guidance to teams on culturally appropriate ways of working with children and young people we support who identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • Support capability via cultural reflection and coaching of staff undertaking planning and contributing to any training resources developed in support of this key function
  • Supporting the development of cultural plans, including supporting contact / connections with kin, community, and stakeholders, and where required contributing to plan development

About you

The successful applicant will have the following skills and experience:

  • Identify as Aboriginal with cultural competency required to undertake this role
  • Knowledge of issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) people and communities in the context of family
  • Knowledge and or lived experience on the issues impacting ATSI children and young people residing in statutory out of home care
  • Knowledge and or lived experience around the social determinates of health impacting on ATSI people
  • Current Driving Licence
  • Comprehensive understanding of culturally appropriate contemporary engagement with ATSI families
  • Extensive knowledge of issues impacting on Aboriginal people and communities in contemporary society Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with ATSI people
  • Demonstrated experience in Networking and stakeholder engagement
  • Demonstrated experience in leading small projects within community
  • Strong communication skills both spoken and written, with the ability to adapt communication styles depending on the setting
