Civil and Structural Engineering

At Woodside, Civil and Structural Engineering encompasses the disciplines of Civil, Geotechnical, Metocean and Structural (onshore; nearshore and port infrastructure; and offshore structures).

Civil Engineers are involved with support of maintenance of Woodside’s existing operating facilities in our onshore processing plants and facilities. Civil Engineers are also involved with development of process plant layouts, location and site selection assessments, definition of enabling and logistics support infrastructure for construction of facilities.

Geotechnical Engineers are responsible for ensuring that the soil/rock interaction with Woodside’s onshore, nearshore and offshore infrastructure is appropriately safe and cost-effective. Geotechnical Engineers work across the opportunity lifecycle, from exploration, development, construction, production and decommissioning. This involves desk study, scoping the collection of geotechnical and geophysical site investigation data, geotechnical site characterisation, management of contractors and assurance of their work. Geotechnical Engineers interface closely with a range of other disciplines including Geohazards Analysts, Offshore and Onshore Structural Engineers, Civil Engineers as well as Drilling, Subsea and Pipelines and GeoTechnical Operations (GTO).

Metocean Engineers are responsible for establishing robust, extreme, and operating criteria for all developments and producing assets to ensure safe offshore operations for Woodside. Metocean Engineers work across the opportunity lifecycle, from exploration, development, construction, production and decommissioning and execute numerical modelling and field measurement campaigns to deliver the required criteria. Metocean Engineers interface closely with a range of other disciplines including Offshore and Onshore Structural Engineers as well as Drilling, Subsea and Pipelines and Seismic Acquisition.

Onshore Structural Engineers are involved with support of maintenance of Woodside’s existing operating facilities in both the onshore processing plants, and the nearshore jetty and wharf facilities. The onshore Structural Engineers are also involved with planning of marine facilities for Greenfield projects and technology development associated with modularisation designs for onshore facilities.

Offshore Structural Engineers are responsible for managing and provide technical input into the design, fabrication, installation and maintenance of Woodside’s offshore structures. This includes substructures similar to the North Rankin B jacket and topside processing structures on fixed and floating facilities. Structural Engineers integrate geotechnical, metocean, process, mechanical, safety and environmental requirements to deliver an offshore structure which is buildable, functional and reliable.

Drilling and Completions

The Drilling and Completions function (D&C) accepts candidates from all engineering disciplines. We design and construct Woodside's well assets to maximise the value of hydrocarbon production from oil and gas reservoirs. The dynamic work environment in D&C will provide graduates the opportunity to extend their professional development through experience with engineering design, wellsite operations and contract management for high value activities. A position in D&C provides opportunities for both office based and offshore drilling rig assignments, and is a heavily team oriented work environment.

Environmental Engineering

Within Woodside, Environmental Engineers play an essential role in identifying and managing environmental risk across Woodside's assets throughout their full life cycle. You will be the interface between external stakeholders (regulators, government organisations, local communities etc.) and the project development effort, ensuring Woodside's proposed developments meet with broad stakeholder acceptance. The work focuses on concept design and specification; preparation of scopes of work; inputting into basis of design documents; support of environmental approvals and stakeholder engagement processes; managing technical studies; advice and verification during detailed design, construction and operations; and maintenance of engineering standards.

Instrumentation, Controls and Electrical Engineering (ICE)

As a graduate in the ICE engineering disciplines, you will work in a multi-disciplinary engineering team and will be primarily responsible for front line engineering support for instrumentation, control systems and electrical systems on Woodside's onshore and offshore operating facilities. Such support will include troubleshooting, investigation and optimisation of equipment and work processes to maximise longer-term integrity and availability of the facilities.

Materials, Inspection and Corrosion Engineering

As a Materials Engineer, you can expect to get involved in materials selection, corrosion engineering and integrity management across Woodside’s assets. You will play a critical role in ensuring safe and reliable operation of our producing facilities throughout their lifecycle by ensuring the selection of appropriate materials, effective management of corrosion and the implementation of optimised inspection strategies. Involvement in these activities will be both challenging and rewarding and will expose you to the many technical issues faced by our producing onshore, offshore and subsea assets and to those associated with the development of new facilities.

Mechanical Engineering

As a global focused upstream and downstream production company with both offshore and onshore facilities, there are a wide variety of opportunities for mechanical engineering graduates covering the breadth of the mechanical engineering discipline. These include regular opportunities for travel to operational sites, troubleshooting problems on static and rotating equipment, optimising the plant and process, participating in the overhaul of major equipment, developing detailed scope of work documents, managing contracts, liaising with vendors, conducting feasibility studies, and participating in major design projects.

Naval Architecture/ Marine Engineering

Naval Architects manage all structural, stability, motion and mooring related issues associated with Woodside’s current and future fleet of Floating Production Systems (e.g. FPSOs) and are also integral to maintaining Class and Marine Statutory compliance. Naval architects are also involved with mooring of drilling rigs and all aspects of offshore installation, construction and decommissioning operations. You will have the opportunity to get exposure to numerous parts of Woodside’s business.

Marine Engineers manage Marine systems including, propulsion, steering, cargo, ballast, steam, Lifeboats and Lifesaving equipment for our existing and future fleet of Floating Production Systems (e.g. FPSOs) for the full life cycle of the facilities from concept design through to operations and decommissioning, continually ensuring compliance with all Marine Statutory and Class requirements. You will have the opportunity to get exposure to numerous parts of Woodside’s business.

Petroleum Engineering

Petroleum Engineers contribute to the effective management of Woodside’s oil and gas fields during appraisal, development, and throughout operation. Our Petroleum Engineers recommend reservoir appraisal programs, optimise reservoir drainage plans and monitor reservoir performance throughout field life. They assess new opportunities for producing reservoirs and optimise flow through Woodside’s integrated production systems to maximise value. A typical day in the life of a graduate Petroleum Engineer at Woodside might range from running dynamic reservoir simulations, travelling offshore to support a well testing campaign or supporting plant operators to implement production start-up and optimisation plans. Our engineers are encouraged to gain experience in diverse areas such as well engineering, subsea and pipelines, commercial and corporate affairs to enhance their career development.

Process/Chemical Engineering

Process engineers at Woodside have the opportunity to support two LNG processing plants based in Karratha, WA, or to support one of several offshore oil or gas facilities. Process engineers have the opportunity to be involved in the conceptual and detailed design, installation, commissioning and startup of new projects – both onshore and offshore. Process Engineers are also sought out to support many other areas of the business where their general engineering skills can be used to improve the way the business works.

Safety and Risk Engineers

Safety risk engineers at Woodside come from various engineering disciplines and interface widely with other engineers and management to ensure that safety is adequately considered in the design of facilities. This discipline provides an opportunity to gain breadth of experience as well as strong communication and influencing skills. Safety risk engineers support all phases of our assets’ lifecycles from new technology evaluation and concept development through to operations and decommissioning and have a key role in liaising with government regulatory authorities. Typical activities that graduates may participate in include safety focused design workshops; risk-based decision making; safety system design; fire, explosion, and gas dispersion analysis; qualitative and quantitative risk assessments; safety case development; human factors engineering and process safety performance management.

Subsea and Pipelines

The Subsea and Pipelines (SSPL) function manages Woodside’s extensive network of subsea and pipeline infrastructure. SSPL supports all phases of asset life cycle from assessing development opportunities, executing projects, and operating and maintaining producing assets. As a graduate engineer in the SSPL function, you will be exposed to all the technical disciplines within subsea and pipelines engineering, with involvement in activities including project management, engineering, construction and technical support to operations. You will be faced with many unique and interesting challenges, which may include working in deep water with remotely operated vehicles, managing asset integrity with high pressure and temperature well stream fluids, or working with new and emerging technologies in the subsea market.
