What You Need to Know as an Architect Graduate
The job of an architect is to design and oversee the construction of buildings or alterations to existing buildings, translating requirements of a client into a functional building. They ensure that the buildings are functional, safe, and suit the requirements for the people who use them. Architects design all sorts of buildings ranging from schools, hospitals, churches, hotels, train stations, skyscrapers and even private houses.
Requirements
Requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to be qualified as an architect other than being a graduate of architecture is to have personal skills such as1:
- Aptitude for mathematics
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Strong drawing/sketching skills
- Sense of design
- General knowledge of the history of architecture
- Awareness of environmental factors
- Analytical skills
- Enthusiasm and imagination

A tip to land a career in architecture for graduates is to have experience beforehand by working part-time at architectural firms or finding an architectural internship. Also compiling a portfolio of projects and designs you have worked on is also a great way to show your work to employers.
What to Expect
Working conditions of an architect typically work on weekdays but may be required to work evenings or weekends to meet deadlines, work with clients and oversee construction progress. Architects mainly work in an office setting, workshop or in the field to survey land and construction areas and projects.
Duties and responsibilities an architect would need to fulfil may include2:
- Creating design blueprints, drawings and material options for clients
- Creating design options based on intended function of space and key factors
- Hire or recommend labourers or contract companies to implement design
- Inspecting construction work in progress to ensure it meets objectives and specifications
- Research and analyse data
- Research spatial layouts, current costs of materials and construction
- Work with clients to design building or landscape of area
- Developing final construction plans
- Preparing reports
