Part-time Work for Students in Marketing and Sales
Why work in marketing and sales?
A part-time job in marketing or sales can be one of the most fulfilling and career-building choices of student employment. In marketing, you will contribute directly to the company by helping them optimally communicate their value to customers. In sales, you will be responsible for bringing in the money. A job in this field is challenging, and obtaining one usually requires beating a lot of competition – but if you can get it, a job in marketing and sales will equip you with invaluable skills, experience and contacts for your future professional life. Future employers (especially if you’re planning on working in marketing after graduation) will consider part-time work in marketing as a sign that you will be a valuable addition to their workforce.
Part-time marketing jobs for students are not as common as other types of student employment – usually companies seek graduate marketers with previous experience in the industry. Usually the companies that accept students in these roles cannot afford to pay for established professional marketers – such as startups or non-profit organisations. Sometimes the work is voluntary. In others, the student is paid by the hour, on a casual basis.
A job in sales has the potential to be highly paid, as the salesperson is given a commission of their sales. However the high figures earned by a small proportion of the salesforce is difficult to achieve. A student looking to work in sales should always be wary of scams that promise easy or quick riches, as this is not typical of the sales industry, except for the best professionals (and it takes time and experience to get to that level), and there are many pyramid schemes targeted to university students. Before signing up for any position, it is advisable to check the company’s background and reputation online.
