Beyond the group work that has been involved in my engineering studies, I have developed practical leadership and teamwork skills through a number of different extra-curricular activities. I have volunteered as a student mentor, working with the English as a Second Language class at Balga Senior High School, and also manage and captain a UWA Social Soccer team. I am also a committee member and team leader within AIESEC UWA, a leadership development organisation that organises and manages volunteer-abroad experiences for students. With these skills and experiences combined, I am an enthusiastic and motivated young engineer, passionate about leadership and teamwork and the role of young people as leaders in developing solutions to the most pertinent challenges of the coming century. hide

My sporting achievements include continuous representative touch football more than 10 years and as a player in the State team since 2006. I am a future leader because I am truly passionate about finding innovative solutions that combine industry outcomes with environmentally sustainable practice. This passion drives my commitment to both my academic and extracurricular activities, motivating me to create change and inspire others. I am also committed to bettering myself and those around me. This year I am the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene event coordinator for the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Engineers without Borders (EWB) society. I ensure that students have opportunities to gain skills and learn more about humanitarian engineering, including two new initiatives - a design competition and student mentoring program. I worked as part of a team of students from three different universities to organise the inaugural Inter-University Appropriate Technology Competition, collaborating to create a better competition than we could have individually. I took initiative during this project to secure industry support and organise venues, contacting EWB industry members and the engineering faculty of UNSW. I impressed other members of the team with my commitment to the society, inspiring them to do more as well. Last summer I studied soil moisture detection technology as a CSIRO Summer Research Student. The major achievement of my research was suggesting a variation of soil moisture measuring procedures to reduce measurement time and OH&S concerns. This innovative approach was firmly backed by my research, and by understanding the needs of the scientists who would be using this technology in the future I was able to deliver a compelling presentation that lead the way for new, safer practices to be undertaken in the future. Additionally, I enjoy my studies at UNSW and have been on the 2014, 2015 Dean Honours List. However, in 2013, I was asking a lot of questions. I was struggling to identify exactly which path I wanted to aim my university study and future career down, what I wanted to stand for and the changes I wanted to influence in the World. I realised I needed to be the engineer of my own change. When my studies concluded for that semester, I threw myself into the deep end, traveling for six months and completing aid work across South East Asia, India and the Middle East. The time away shaped my positive approach to life, work and the way I hope to achieve and benefit the World. I have a global outlook and appreciation for the weighing of different views in reaching solutions. Importantly, the experiences strengthened my ability to adapt to any situation and in doing so empathise broadly with those involved. Having rowed competitively, I recognise the benefits of strong teamwork. I seek an environment where intelligent and collaborative individuals unite in tackling difficult legal issues. Intellectual creativity and an appreciation for the wider context is essential to this process, a skillset I employed whilst Chair of a Model United Nations conference in Jordan. I understand that to be a trusted legal advisor and industry leader, you must provide more than an excellent synopsis of the legal landscape. Throughout university I have been dedicated to my studies focusing on finding the solutions to problems when they arise. For example when not understanding technical skills in my accounting and finance subjects I seek to fix these when they arise rather than wait until it becomes too overwhelming at the end. This is reflected in maintaining a high distinction average. To compliment this, I have also recognised the importance of embracing diversity in being a leader by seeking opportunities to be well rounded. I have written to employees Lumina Chartered Accountants and Boyce Chartered Accountants to gain as much insight and experience into the financial services industry by asking them for the opportunity to undertaking work experience. I have had continually strong academic results throughout my education, graduating from Melbourne High School in 2011 with an ATAR of 99.65, and achieving a BSc GPA of 88.375. I was in the Dean's Honours List of 2012 (top 3 percent of first-year students), and received the Hastie Exhibition prize awarded to the two best performing students in two philosophy subjects. In the coming year I will be undertaking research concerning molecular quantum electrodynamics, and hope to lead the way in developing tangible applications. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills are key to being a future leader in any category. I have proven to possess such skills as president of Flare Dance Ensemble, leading a committee of 15 and a club of 500. As a dance teacher, laboratory demonstrator and online tutor, I have consolidated these skills in addition to learning how to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner. This will enable me to effectively convey important scientific progress to the wider community, which I would argue is the most important role of any scientific leader. Currently, I am running a major project at university as a Project Manager/Scrum Master where I work in a team to create a mobile application for the UTS HELPS bookings system. This task has required me to quickly develop my problem solving, analytical and organisational skills to put each team member skills and knowledge to their maximum potential.In the workplace, working in activity based working (ABW) environments allows me to engage with different staff members and understand to significance of communication and workplace cohesion. In the IT industry, it is often convenient and easy to communicate online, but the importance of face-to-face meetings should also be underlined. Paradoxically, having such a degree of adaptability and responsiveness has also resonated through my studies and employment and emanated in my consistence achievement of results and targets. In 2014 in the session before my International exchange to China I was enrolled in university, whilst working three jobs, one as a team leader at a busy restraint, and volunteering at the same time, this experience has taught myself that I am able to organise myself and my time effectively, reach my short and long term goals as well as handling myself and others (other members of the wait staff) under stressful circumstances. In regards to IT (and also Design), my main interests lie within web design as well as database design and administration. I developed the core proprietary algorithms of the system, resulting in several provisional patents and significant interest from investors and the startup community. This year I was invited to run the ECG/ Vo2 Max laboratory component of the accelerated Griffith program for high school students. It was through this placement that I discovered the lack of education around health in the youth of today. In order to combat this, I want to research the cardiovascular system more thoroughly and create an interactive seminar based on the importance of good health for high school students. The youth of today are the future leaders of tomorrow and I want to inspire them to lead a healthier lifestyle. Currently, I am working on multiple projects which include opening a university op shop and creating a water safety program in the Philippines to prevent the extremely high drowning rates. Throughout the planning of these projects I have demonstrated determination, organisation and the importance of teamwork. A leader cannot succeed if the team does not, the difference between leadership and management is that a leader directs the team to achieve goals whereas a manager allocates work to team members to finish projects. A leader looks at the functionality and effectiveness of the team; they ensure that the team achieves the goals set not just the targets. To me important characteristics of a leader are the ability to listen to others, have an open mind to the ideas of others and have effective communication; a leader also has to make time for the team and has to allocate time specifically for speaking to individual team members on a regular basis. As part of my Rover Scout involvement I am the team leader of our Mud Bash rally car team. This project involves around 10 members of the rover crew and is responsible for building a CAMS certified rally car and entering it in an amateur motorkhana rally in Victoria. In order to practice good leadership the early stages of the project were focussed on setting goals and team functionality including establishing team expectations so all team members could achieve what they wanted out of the project. This approach worked very well in the early stages of the project, as a team we all decided on a car and began repairing the engine however recently progress has slowed as the expectations have not been met. This was partly due to a misunderstanding on my part of the importance of dedicating time as a leader to focus on communicating with the team. Consequentially I have begun to communicate with team members individually about the expectations and progress of the team which has significantly boosted the productivity of the team to the point where we are awaiting roll cage installation. hide

I was responsible for leading a team of four communication officers on two state wide events including a federal election panel discussion and a debate. These were further broken down into their component systems, allowing for each variable to be systematically tested. These same principles can be applied to increasingly complex problems.2: Approaching ambiguous problems by applying structure In many situations, there is no clear path to the solution. It often is not even clear what the question to be solved is. My work with Cochlear involved understanding the chemistry of Cochlear implants. However, it was not certain whether understanding precise chemical mechanisms was even possible. My approach involved understanding Cochlear key priority, which was characterising device reliability. This allowed me to prioritise my work to focus on developing a statistics based numerical model, as per company priorities, and running experiments to understand the science on the side. This approach allows me to generate valuable solutions in messy, real world situations.3: Communicating appropriately Appropriate communication is essential for communicating the importance of technical work to decision makers or non-experts and also for understanding the needs of others.
