A Day in the Life of a Law Clerk at MinterEllison

Posted by GradConnection
Hannah Hurst is a Graduate Lawyer at MinterEllison. She first joined MinterEllison as a Summer Clerk and graduated from Macquarie University with a Bachelor of Laws with a Bachelor of Commerce double degree.

Ever wondered what a day in the life of a law clerk looks like? Spend a day with former clerk turned law grad, Hannah Hurst, to see what it's like to work at leading law firm, MinterEllison.

But First, Coffee

I kick off the day by grabbing coffee with the other clerks - at MinterEllison there were thirty of us in one cohort, which makes for some fantastic opportunities to socialise and make connections.

Tasks for the Day

Then I’ll head to my desk to settle in and get given my tasks for the day, which looked different depending on my two rotations of Insurance and Corporate Risk. They both involved front-end (contracts and advisory work) and back-end work (litigation).

Lunch Time

More time to socialise! The clerks usually all have lunch together which is another great time to catch up and chat.

Court and Contracts

After lunch I’ll get on with the tasks I’ve been assigned for the day. This can range anywhere from putting together a bundle for court, going to court or even doing a contracts review. The best part about doing a clerkship is that it’s always different what you get thrown into because everyone wants you to learn. Plus, the office is usually in good spirits coming up to Christmas!

Winding Down

As you sign off at the end of the day, the clerks will usually head off together for a drink or clerk sport! This is a friendly inter-firm competition that brings clerks from different firms together to compete in games like soccer and netball. It's yet another opportunity to build your network, have some fun, and definitely not get too competitive. 😉
