How to Make Connections with People During University

University can be a new and exciting space; it can also feel isolating if you are having trouble making connections. It is integral that you are able to make connections with people during university so that you can find a community, have support and gain new experiences that can help you in your career. This article will provide areas in which you can find and form those connections. 

Living on Campus 

Living on your university campus can be exciting and allow you to meet other uni students who are also looking for connections. This is not for everyone, but if you are moving to university, spending your first year living on campus can be very helpful. Especially if you are an international student, leaving your country can be an intimidating time, but by living on campus you can meet other international students that will help you feel at home. University colleges have a wide range of activities and social gatherings that will allow you to meet new people. For example, at The Australian National University in Canberra, they have sports games and themed parties, between colleges. By taking advantage of these fun social interactions, you can connect with new and exciting people, giving you the tools to have a wonderful university experience.  

Clubs and Societies 

Orientation week or O-week is an amazing chance for you to meet new people and join clubs and societies. There are always many fun activities and events that give you the chance to interact with a wide range of people. An important day is Market Day, where you can learn about different clubs and societies while connecting with a wide range of people. There is a club for every interest, and you can join as many as you want. You wide range of talk to older university students, who can give you advice and guidance when needed. Do not be afraid to join clubs you have no experience in because it is a chance to enjoy your time at University and try new things.  

Networking Events and Seminars 

As you get older in your university experience, and closer to graduation. You may want to try going to networking events and seminars. It can help you engage in conversations about your career plans and graduate opportunities. Seminars also allow you to meet like-minded people, who are passionate about the same things you are passionate about. Talking to the lecturer gives you the ability to learn more about your area of interest and creating a connection can encourage you to explore it further. In this space, you can learn more about yourself and it can facilitate you maybe furthering your study or taking on a new area of study. Networking events are vital in seeking mentorship and guidance for your career. There are exceptional people in these spaces who are more than ready to give you help when needed. They can also give you advice to navigate being a graduate and the mistakes not to make. 

Studying Abroad

Studying abroad can be an exceptional experience to connect with others during your time at university. It is an exciting space to learn more about other countries, while also pursuing your area of interest. There is the opportunity to interact with people from not only your university, but the university abroad as well. It is a whole new environment, to meet new people, lecturers and potential mentors. Students are often glad when they can study abroad because it gives them a new perspective on their study area and allows them to make new connections. 

Overall making connections with people during university, allows you to form important connections that will not only facilitate your enjoyment through uni but will also allow you to meet people that will help your career.
