About GradConnection’s Top Employers Rankings

As Australia’s biggest graduate jobs site, we feature over 200 major graduate employers to an audience of 150,000 registered graduates each year.

This gives us a rich, detailed dataset from which to develop rankings for the top graduate employers for each capital city and each discipline based on applications made through our website. This data was anonymised prior to analysis.

Sydney’s Top 25 employers

Here’s Sydney’s Top 25 employers ranked by the applications made by Sydney based graduates in 2014. To check out the Top 25 employers for each of the other capital cities, and for each discipline e.g. Arts, Commerce, Engineering and more check out the interactive

As the top graduate employer overall, professional services firm KPMG tops the rankings for all the capital cities with the exception of Brisbane, where the Queensland Government ranks first.

The Commonwealth Bank comes second, given its large intake of graduates for its head offices at Harbour Street and Darling Park in Sydney.

Unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by organisations with a significant office site in Sydney, with most of the organisations located centrally in the CBD with a handful in key regional areas such as North Sydney.

The Queensland Government makes it onto the Sydney list at 17th given its substantial intake of graduates across 17 separate government bodies.

In all, the list is heavily dominated by the commercial sector, especially the professional services, financial services, technology and fast moving consumer goods industries. Interestingly, the Sydney rankings are at odds with most of the other capital cities in terms of its lack of mining, engineering and construction companies. BHP Billiton, Mainfreight, Aurizon and Rio Tinto appear frequently in other capital cities rankings, but not in the Sydney top 25. Finally, there’s the underrepresentation of government employers, which can perhaps be explained by both a preference for the commercial sector generally, along with a reluctance to relocate to Canberra where the bulk of the government jobs are.
