Strathfield Council (Council) is a medium sized Council located in Sydney’s Inner West. The area of the Council comprises approximately 14 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 46,000 residents, which is growing at 2.5-3% annually. Based on NSW Government projections, the population will increase to over 80,000 by 2036.

About the Role

Strathfield Council has a fantastic opportunity suitable for Undergraduate Student who’s undertaking latter years of tertiary studies. We’re seeking for a Community Development Assistant to facilitates programs, services and information in accordance with community need with priority given to the key target groups, in accordance with the Community Strategic Plan.

In order to undertake the role, it requires the following duties:

  • Assisting with the coordination of a range of community programs and services in accordance with the Community Strategic plan and identified community need
  • Working in partnership with key agencies to facilitate a range of community programs.
  • be a ‘hub’ for community inquiry regarding services that support key priority target groups.
  • liaise with other Council’s departments in respect of the needs of community development services.
  • Support Community Development Coordinator to provide events, presentations and regular activities such as Children and Youth Drop in, Seniors Week, Youth Week, Children’s School Holiday programs, Children’s Week, Homelessness Week and international Days promoting community awareness and Community Grants review and selection.
  • Assist Community Development Coordinator to develop surveys and coordinate community engagement activities to assist Council planning activities.
  • Be committee officer for Multicultural Committee including administrative tasks such as minute taking.
  • Assist with research and development of plans and business cases to support Council addressing needs of community and in accordance with Operational Plan.
  • undertake ad hoc projects as required by Coordinator.

About You

To succeed in the role, you will have the following:

  • Working towards a tertiary degree or diploma qualification in Community Services, Social Sciences, Health Sciences or relevant qualification and experience.
  • Class C Driver’s Licence.
  • First Aid Certificate (Desirable)
  • Working with Children check.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify social needs and identify solutions to issues or service gaps.
  • High level communication skills (oral and written).
  • Sound administrative skills and ability to organise tasks / events with competing deadlines.
  • Ability and skills to communicate cross-culturally, and professionally to all community and agencies.
  • Understanding of the needs of aged and disabled, children, youth, women and families and people from multicultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Equal Employment Opportunity, Work Health and Safety and Cultural Diversity principles.
  • Well-developed computer literacy skills, specifically in Microsoft Excel, other Microsoft Office software and records management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Council’s values and Code of Conduct.
  • Previous experience in working in community services. (Desirable)
