The team comradery at ITW and value of shared risk is prominently seen throughout the business and it is why I would recommend this graduate program to anyone! "

" Being a Fortune 200 company there are so many areas in the business to explore. My Mentor has helped me navigate not just my career but the organisation as well. Having studied Mechatronics Engineering, I would not have the opportunity to learn so much about different departments of a business if I had begun my career in a typical engineering role. The graduate program is a hidden Gem designed to build both technical and leadership skill set of the graduates. "

80/20 Business Process

ITW’s proprietary 80/20 business process has been integral to the company’s success for nearly 30 years. Through the implementation of this process, each ITW business focuses on the 20 percent of its customers that generate 80 percent of its revenues and structures the business around serving and growing relationships with these key customers. The efficiencies gained from 80/20 deliver best-in-class operating margins, strong free operating cash flow and differentiated returns on invested capital. ITW’s commitment to 80/20 is stronger than ever, and the company continues to make the investments necessary to ensure that 80/20 remains a key driver of its competitive advantage now and in the future.

ITW’s unique approach to customer-focused innovation has fuelled decades of profitable growth. The company’s innovation efforts are “80/20-enabled” as its businesses focus on building relationships with major customers to develop deep knowledge and insight around their key needs and pain points. Working innovation from “the customer back” sets ITW apart, and it is these key customer insights and learnings that drive innovation at ITW. The company’s portfolio of more than 16,000 granted and pending patents reflects its ongoing commitment to developing innovative solutions for our key customers.

Decentralized & Entrepreneurial Culture

Bhavya Mishra

" I quickly learnt that the work culture at ITW is very warm and not hierarchical, everyone is genuinely happy to answer any questions and assist with the learning process. This type of work culture made it extremely helpful in terms of networking and also maximised my learning experience as I had access to people of all functions, roles and divisions as resources whenever I needed help. ‘The ITW Graduate Program will take you through our three divisions. Retail, Commercial & Residential. If you’re like me, then I guarantee that after a few months you’ll start to gain an odd interest in concrete and screws and be looking into every building site that you walk past for ITW products. The graduate program is rotation based giving you diverse challenges and allowing networking opportunities with plenty of stakeholders. What attracted me to ITW was the testimonials of previous graduates, the global reach of the company, and the interview day where it felt genuine that they care about development and innovation. Through my rotations I’ve had the flexibility to explore sustainability opportunities within the company and feel valued that I’m encouraged to spend time exploring these options and recognised of their importance.

I was alerted to the ITW Graduate Program through GradConnection. It was during the graduate assessment day that I knew this was an organisation I needed to work for. What stood out to me was the people, the culture and the unique business processes. I felt like every conversation I had was genuine and I was quickly put at ease with the easy going nature of everyone I met. When the Group President explained how ITW likes to operate, I was intrigued by the organisations passion for simplicity through the 80/20 model. This process soon became the cornerstone of my everyday life. I left the Graduate Assessment day smiling ear to ear and hoping for a that career defining phone call the following week.

I’m someone who wants to take full control of my career. The ITW Graduate Program grants me this opportunity through their diversity of hands on experiences and limitless growth potential.

I can’t speak highly enough of ITW’s execution of the 70:20:10 learning model. During my rotations I have quickly grown a range of essential foundational business skills through experience. Each rotation took me out of my comfort zone but provided me with enough support to thrive. I feel like my managers are genuinely invested in developing me and helping me deliver on my outcomes.

My mentor has been a helpful resource. He has a wealth of broad business experience and it’s a privilege to be able to engage him for the acceleration of my development. There are some things that you can’t learn in a textbook, and my mentor has been there to guide me through those experiences when needed.

ITW’s Young Professionals Network has been a great platform to initiate relationships across the broader ITW Businesses. These regular events are really something to look forward to in the calendar, to grow your network or blow off some steam!

I was firstly attracted to working for ITW for not only the fact it is a global Fortune 200 company, but also due to the rotation-based graduate program and being given the opportunity to work within different functions of the business. Even though I have only been a part of this graduate program for the last 6 months, I have already been involved in three projects relating to quality, marketing and operations throughout this short time- frame and have gained insight into all areas of business because of the variety of the projects. This graduate program also provides the graduates with support through their mentorship program where you can gain assistance and work together with these mentors for your own personal development. This mentorship program has assisted me greatly in refining my presentation skills which is knowledge I can take and use in the future and throughout my entire career.

The biggest surprise I experienced whilst being a part of this program is how adaptable ITW is. As 2020 has been a year with many challenges, ITW has made changes that prioritise the safety and wellbeing of their employees whilst continuing to conduct business as usual. The team comradery at ITW and value of shared risk is prominently seen throughout the business and it is why I would recommend this graduate program to anyone!

Working at ITW and undertaking the graduate program has been an integral part of my professional journey. Wide range of experiences in various divisions and functions has allowed me to better understand my true strengths, weaknesses, interests and capabilities that have in turn led me to be in a much better position to make an educated decision about what I want to do with my career. After only 18 months with the company, I have worked in 3 different divisions of the company and 3 different functions and have learnt vital skills related to each function and been able to diversify my skillset and learnings.

Having a mentor at ITW from day 1 has allowed me to feel a lot more comfortable as I have been able to consult with my mentor and ask questions, ask for relevant guidance related to any part of the business and just have a friendly chat with someone who is not directly linked to my project

This program offers a mix of meaningful projects and real on-the-job learnings. For me personally, working through different projects has enhanced my skills in project management, allowed me to widen my networks within the company, gain pivotal communication and presentation skills, and provided me with a sense of achievement at the conclusion of each rotation.

I always wanted to work for an iconic brand. After I finished university, I was so fortunate that I had the opportunity to join ITW. The transition from university to a full-time role can be challenging but ITW made the transition really smooth by offering such a supportive environment.

I’m towards the end of my first rotation in Marketing and as I look back, I’ve had so many opportunities to learn new skills, develop myself both personally and professionally and I’ve been able to lead meaningful and impactful projects.

Every graduate is allocated a mentor to lean and learn from. Being a Fortune 200 company there are so many areas in the business to explore. My Mentor has helped me navigate not just my career but the organisation as well. Having studied Mechatronics Engineering, I would not have the opportunity to learn so much about different departments of a business if I had begun my career in a typical engineering role. Throughout the program, I have been able to work on challenging, real-life projects that make a big difference for both ITW and our customers. I’m constantly encouraged and empowered to take the lead on my projects, which creates an exciting atmosphere to work in as I can see the tangible effects of the decisions I make for my projects.

Coming from an engineering background, the Graduate Program has provided many opportunities to develop skills outside of my area of study. I have been able to work in a number of different roles, such as sales and marketing, which enables me to develop a much broader skillset that I would not have developed had I worked in a more traditional engineering role. This hands on experience in different departments not only helps me understand what types of roles I would like to do in the future, but more importantly helps me become a more effective, well-rounded professional and leader in the future.

I’m excited at the opportunities to learn and grow within the Graduate Program and the future opportunities it opens up for me. I truly believe the ITW Graduate Program will equip me with the skills and experience required to kick-start the rest of my career.

After completing my Masters of Engineering (Civil) I was incredibly lucky to find the ITW Graduate Program. Being a Fortune 200 company with a focus on working culture and employee development, ITW has countless opportunities that I’m keen to sink my teeth into from Finance and Sales to Marketing and HR. The ITW graduate program allows us to be placed in many divisions such as these within two years to get a detailed view of how the entire business runs. This was an obvious first choice for me as the range of learning experiences offered is, to my knowledge, unparalleled by any other graduate program I have heard of.
