AI Job Summary

 About Maple-Brown Abbott

Maple-Brown Abbott has significantly evolved since our origins nearly 40 years ago across investment styles, asset classes, geographies and client types. Today we are a boutique of boutiques, focusing on active management of differentiated listed equity strategies. As one of the earliest Australian managers to sign up to the UN PRI, we have a long history of deep ESG integration which is core to each of our strategies.

We are privately owned with around 60 staff in Sydney with around A$10 billion in assets under management as at 30 June 2023.

Maple-Brown Abbott’s 2024 female summer internship program

Maple-Brown Abbott’s paid female summer internship is a six-week program on offer for a female candidate who is in their penultimate year of studies. Our female intern will be given the opportunity to work alongside key industry professionals and will rotate between three investment teams covering Australian value equities, Asian and emerging market equities and global listed infrastructure.

Why are we doing it?

We are seeking to actively provide more avenues for more women to enter the funds management industry and have received an exemption from the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board to recruit for females only for this internship. The objective of the Maple-Brown Abbott female summer intern program is to help address the gender imbalance usually seen in the pool of qualified investment professionals by encouraging graduate females to join the financial services industry, and in particular, funds management. We consider the program to be a success. Since the program started in 2019 we have had five female summer interns – of the four interns who have graduated, three joined Maple-Brown Abbott as graduates and the other took a graduate role with another financial services firm.

Who should apply?

We are looking for a female university student who is in the penultimate or final year of their undergraduate degree and is studying a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Actuarial Science or Engineering. Other degrees will also be considered. Candidates should have a proven track record of strong academic results and show a keen interest in financial markets and be interested in investing. Candidates must also hold Australian citizenship.

What we are looking for in our female intern

Our preferred candidate is an analytical thinker, who is not afraid to take on a challenge. They are eager to learn more about our business and the industry more generally. In addition, they should possess strong communication skills (both verbal and written), be able to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and have strong attention to detail.

Where you will be working:

International Towers, Barangaroo, Sydney, NSW Australia

How it will work:

This internship is a paid six-week program. It is not a permanent position. Our program will take place during the summer university break (usually starting in late January). During this time our candidate will work five days a week in our offices.

You will be assigned a dedicated mentor to oversee your internship and guide you along the way, and will spend two weeks working with each with three investment teams to give you broad investment exposure across listed equities. The role will include financial modelling, basic investment report writing as well as participation in company and internal investment meetings.

How do you apply?

Applications for the internship are open until 13 October 2023. Please send your resume, academic transcript and cover letter highlighting why you are interested in the internship to [email protected]

We look forward to hearing from you soon.
