SW

Jessica Ni

Jessica Ni, Consultant – Assurance and Advisory

Your background?

I was born and raised in Melbourne where I chose Accounting as one of my VCE subjects in Year 12. From there, I continued down this Commerce path and studied Accounting and Finance at The University of Melbourne. I was lucky enough to be a part of the Summer Vacation Program in my penultimate year and was consequently offered a Graduate position as a Consultant when I graduated.

Currently, I have worked at SW for 8 months and it was been an extremely fulfilling experience. I am surrounded by hardworking like-minded people and they motivate me to continue to strive for excellence every day.

What’s your role at SW

SW is an Australian owned advisory and accounting firm who deliver a range of professional services, with Assurance and Advisory, Business Advisory and Tax as the main three divisions.

What is unique to SW is its member alliance with SW International, which creates special opportunities to connect and work with clients from SW China, the largest indigenous Chinese domestic accounting practice. This gives SW an edge in accessing the Asia-Pacific market and in developing relationships with large influential players in many industries.

Specifically, in Assurance and Advisory, SW offers both risk management and IT advisory services, and external and internal audit. Our goal is to provide tailored local knowledge and advice to clients and ensure they reach and achieve their strategic objectives and to build their confidence to continue to thrive in the future.

3 pieces of advice for students?

  • Be genuine - Let your personality shine through. It is important for you to see if you can really align yourself with the company and for recruiters to see if you are a good culture-fit.
  • Participate in extra-curricular activities - Not only is this a great way to make friends and meet all kinds of different people, but a fun way to expand and discover new hobbies.
  • Don’t be afraid of rejection - We all have to start somewhere and it is always helpful to think of these experiences as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Lawrence Dang-Nguyen

Lawrence Dang-Nguyen, Consultant, Business and Private Client Advisory

Your Background?

I was born in Melbourne and grew up here throughout my whole life. I went to Melbourne University majoring in Accounting and Finance. After graduating with a bachelor of commerce I took a gap year travelling with friends and family and learning a lot about different cultures. To me that year was one of the most memorable time because it gave me a new perspective on life especially when traveling to developing countries and seeing people that were not as fortunate as we are in Australia but still be able to have a fulfilled life.

After the year, I started working in a small accounting firm which gave me a peek into the life of an accountant and gave me a strong tax foundation. I then went to apply for SW and went through a number of interview stages and was very fortunate to be chosen to be a graduate for SW in 2020. Due to Covid-19 we only worked in the office for 3 weeks and then started working from home which was challenging at first especially for us graduates who are just starting off and don’t know much. But eventually through the great support from SW, we were able to adapt working from home.

What’s your role at SW?

SW provides clients with assistance on tax and accounting matters and my area of responsibility is helping clients with their payroll.

I am in the Business and Private Client Advisory division but my team specialises in payroll for clients. Our division consists of various tasks ranging from providing tax returns to all types of entities to doing financial statements and providing financial advice. My team, however provides assistance with the client’s payroll which consists of various tasks including assisting clients with their single touch payroll, assisting them in paying their employees including taking care of their PAYG withholding, superannuation, etc.

I am very fortunate to be in a team that performs different tasks every day and doesn’t do the same thing which can be very boring in my opinion. In certain days, I would help with the client’s credit card reconciliation for several of their directors, prepare their payroll tax, working papers for their employee’s back pay calculations, financial statements, tax returns, activity statements and consolidation working paper. The work that I do is really rewarding and I get to learn something new every day.

3 pieces of advice for students?

  • Join as many clubs in university because that is where you can make a lot of friends and can network with a lot of different types of people from different courses.
  • Have a work life balance and work on your social skills because that is what firms are looking for these days and not just your score.
  • Apply for internships when you are in university because a lot of firms prioritise experience when looking at applicants.

Joy Hsieh

Joy Hsieh, Consultant – Assurance and Advisory

Your Background?

I grew up in Melbourne and went to MacRobertson Girls High School. During high school I was a keen debater who thought I was definitely going to study law at university, but I had a wonderful accounting teacher whose passion for the field really piqued my interest at the time. I soon found myself taking interest in accounting, which led to me choosing to study a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne. I started applying for vacationer programs in my second year of university where I was offered a vacationer role at SW. The application process for SW was similar to most professional services firms, but what I really appreciated about the firm was that the People and Culture team moved through the application process in a quick manner, and were very communicative throughout the entire process – anyone who’s been through a similar recruitment process will know the anxiety that comes with waiting for a response to that phone interview you attended over a month ago!

The summer vacation program at SW ran over 6 weeks, where I was given the opportunity not only to work on external audit engagements straight off the bat, but also participate in the firm’s Social Club events and really get a feel for what the culture at SW is like. I enjoyed participating in the vacationer program, and accepted the graduate position which was offered to me shortly after the vacationer program ended.

What’s your role at SW?

SW is an Australian owned advisory and accounting firm which has offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and is also part of the SW International network which has offices across 14 countries and regions globally. I work as a graduate consultant in the Assurance and Advisory division in Melbourne. The Assurance and Advisory division at SW offers both external and internal audit services including IT advisory. So far I have only worked on external audit engagements, which involve examining the financial statements of an entity to ensure that they provide a true and fair view of the entity’s operations.

As a graduate, I help out on a lot of the sampling and testing that is performed as part of the risk response stage of the audit, however I have also been involved in the planning phase by attending client interviews to gain a thorough understanding of the client’s business processes and functions. Working on external audit engagements has enabled me to develop an in-depth view into our clients’ business operations and really get to know how different businesses function and operate.

3 pieces of advice for students?

  • Actively engage with the activities and clubs offered at university – I was very much a passive student during university, who preferred to stay at home and watch all my lectures online, which led to me missing out on the diverse range of events and activities which took place on campus – something I definitely regret now!
  • Take advantage of internship/vacationer opportunities – these are your chance to get a preview of what it’s like working in a particular service line and explore your options before it comes time to apply for graduate roles.
  • Have an open mind and a positive attitude – starting to consider your career path during university can be daunting, especially once you’ve started applying for roles and possibly been rejected from a couple. Learn from each experience and take on any feedback you receive during the process with a positive attitude.

5:00am

I’m definitely a morning person so I am always up early to head to the gym and some endorphins going and a clear mind, ready to tackle the day at the office. During summer I’m lucky enough to see the sunrise on my drive to the gym which makes it even easier.

SW Australia

After the gym, I head home for a breakfast and coffee before getting ready for work.

7:30am

Commute to the office on the train and catch up on a good podcast on the way.

9:00am

Officially start the workday. I check in with the team in the office and have a quick chat about our weekends and anything that needs to be done today. I’ll then review any emails that have come in over night from our international clients and make a to-do list of what I need to do today.

SW Australia

10:00am

The client we’re working with at the moment sends through some documents that need actioning. A lot of our work is based in Excel so I get into focus mode and start working through the documents and our corresponding workpaper. The great thing about our office is we have small break-out rooms which we can use if you don’t want any distractions and are great for just focusing on getting the task done.

12:00pm

My team in Brisbane then has a virtual catch-up with our team in Perth. Given the time difference, they’ve just started their day so it’s a perfect time to check-in. Being a nationalised firm, we have great flexibility to work with different teams in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth.

We have a chat about how everyone is going and discuss some outstanding items for the client we are all working with at the moment. We discuss any problems and work through them all together to find the best solution.

SW Australia

1:00pm

After the team meeting, its time for lunch. Today I decided to bring in some left over food from last nights meal. I enjoyed this with my colleagues and caught up with other people in the office while we had lunch.

1:30pm

Back into work, this time focusing on some expense testing. I work with my senior on the best method for this and we pick sample of expenses from the year that we will test. From there, I prepare the workpaper and request list for the client and discuss with them about providing some supporting documents and if there is any issues.

3:30pm

Time for a caffeine boost. We are lucky enough to have a coffee machine in the office that we use every day. I make a coffee for myself and my senior and practice my (non-existent) coffee art skills.

SW Australia

My senior and I have a quick chat about our upcoming trip to a mine site in Western Queensland. Working in audit provides great travel opportunities to go out and physically see clients operations and work with them.

4:00pm

Starting to wind up for the day and making sure all the tasks I wanted to complete are ticked off.

I review some training materials and videos for a new system being rolled out across the firm for data analytics. It’s a very interesting and smart software program so I log in and have a go with the demo settings as I know we will be working with a client soon that will require this.

5:30pm

I log off for the day and I head to my local netball courts for netball training with my team. I love playing netball, so you’ll usually hear me chatting about our game on the weekend or running off to a social game with friends.

SW Australia

If I haven’t got netball, I’ll squeeze in some CA readings on the train ride home and do some study at home if I’m feeling motivated.

9:30pm

Time to wind down for the day and head to bed, ready for a new day tomorrow.

Creating opportunities together (Co2 committee)

Our people, clients and community are at the heart of what we do. We are committed to creating opportunities to support our communities through a range of programs, underpinned by our embedded firm values.

Our Co2 Committee provide a platform for our people to engage with and improve the lives of those less fortunate than themselves. It is also our aim to promote teamwork, work-life balance, empathy and compassion, increase team morale, commitment and truly live our values beyond our work environment.

Mental Health is a contributing factor for many issues faced by Australians. In recognition of this, our annual staff and partner survey consistently demonstrates our desire to ensure that we show our support to assisting each other and organisations that support those that experience mental illness or health challenges, closely followed by Children and those experiencing homelessness.

The major community programs we support each year are listed below. Beyond fundraising, our focus is on educating and bringing to light the stories of our own people managing adversity and showing resilience.

Currently we are active in supporting a range of charities and activities such as:

  • Vinnies CEO Sleepout and soup vans
  • Liptember
  • Movember
  • Black Dog Institute
  • Fitted For Work
  • Starlight Foundation
  • RUOK? Day

Our Recruitment Process

SW

Check out our tips for success in the recruitment process below:

We recognise the Graduate/student application process can bring about a range of different emotions. That’s why we like to keep our recruitment process fairly simple.

ShineWing Australia has five stages of graduate and student recruitment. Each stage is detailed below to ensure you are best prepared and can show us the real you when it counts.

1. Online application

Your career could start with a simple online application where we will ask you questions about your background, skills and experiences. What we really want to know is why you have chosen us and what makes you different.

Tip: make sure you do your research.

2. Phone Interview

After successfully getting through the application stage, you will be invited for a phone interview with a member from the People and Culture team. You will be able to elect a time slot that suits you. This is a chance for us to talk through some of your skills and experience in more detail while assessing your verbal communication skills.

Tip: don’t forget to let your personality shine through.

3. Assessment Centre

After nailing your phone interview, you will be invited to attend our Assessment Centre. This will give you the opportunity to meet and connect with various people from our firm, see where you could potentially be working and ask any questions you might have. We’ll be looking for people with the right attitude and behaviours that align strongly with our values.

Tip: it’s okay to be nervous, just remember we’re very supportive through this stage.

4. Face-to-face Interview

You’re almost there! The final step of the recruitment process will be an interview with a senior member of the Firm from the division that you have elected for. You will have the opportunity to tell us about your life, university studies, extra-curricular and any work experience that you have had.

Tip: your interview will also include some behavioural questions.

5. Offer

If you are successful following your face-to-face interview, we will contact you by phone to offer you an opportunity to start your career with us! We will send your formal agreement in the mail. Happy days!

Tip: celebrate!

How to be a Stand Out Candidate?

SW

Top 10 reasons to work with us.

SW

1. We are one of the most favoured Graduate and Student employers in the industry (we’ve got the awards to prove it!)

We are proud to be in the Australian Financial Review's Top 100 Graduate Employers 2019 and the Australian Association of Graduate Employers (AAGE) Top 100 Graduate Employers 2020. We have also ranked in the top six for three years in a row for the AAGE Top 100 Intern Programs. It is fantastic to be recognised for providing positive experiences for our Graduates, Vacationers and Co-operative students.

2. The world is your workplace.

At ShineWing Australia our clients operate across the globe and for our people this means constant opportunities to work across borders. Immerse yourself in new ways of doing business, build a network of contacts and enjoy new cultures. Then, when the time is right, you may also like to consider a secondment. Sounds good right? Did we mention you get paid as well?

3. Take the lead and create your own pathway.

Our firm’s purpose and network is unique. Building a career at ShineWing Australia will see you join a hardworking and friendly team that values creating opportunities for our people and our clients. Create your own individual story and become a part of ours.

4. Your CA is our CA.

Getting through your CA can be tough. We've all been there and we feel your pain, which is why we're there for you. We provide a range of assistance including in-house sessions, financial assistance, study support materials, study leave and even mentors who have recently completed their CA.

5. Our values underpin our purpose.

Our values are at the very heart of our firm and guide the way we interact within our firm and the manner in which we interact and engage with you. We pride ourselves on having a supportive and approachable culture which promotes having-a-go and celebrating success. Our people are our strength.

6. You won't be invisible to clients.

Client contact can be equal parts exciting and scary. Our philosophy is to introduce our Graduates, Co-operatives and Vacationers to clients from the start. It's great for your confidence and growth and it's much more interesting than sitting in the background churning out reports. Of course, we'll give you all the guidance you need to blow their socks off.

7. Cultural diversity is a part of who we are.

Our people come from many different walks of life and cultural backgrounds. Australian, New Zealander, Indian, South African, Chinese, Russian, German, Malaysian, Macedonian, Vietnamese, Dutch just to name a few. We thrive with this diversity. With this international mind-set, it is not surprising that we are part of one of the largest Asian and global networks with a presence in over 14 countries and regions.

8. You'll have all the time you need.

This is real life, so there will be times when you need to work extra hours to deliver for our clients. But we give you those hours back in quieter periods through a benefit we call ‘matched time’.

9. We give you more holidays.

We’re not sure who came up with the idea but we guess they love long weekends too! Each year we provide two additional paid days off for all of our people to enjoy. Did you know that short breaks can in fact boost productivity?

10. We believe good coffee makes you smarter.

This is why we chose a CBD location in all three cities; all with a ridiculous number of great cafés within a five-minute walk. Non-coffee drinkers fear not! We've noticed that fresh fruit seems to have the same positive effect on cognitive powers and provide fresh fruit daily.

Our Diversity, Culture and Inclusiveness

Diversity and Inclusion diversity icon

SW

SW recruits and selects employees on the basis of merit (such as skills, experience or ability to perform the job), regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability. In the latest Engagement survey, 90% of SW staff and people strongly agreed they feel that SW provides an inclusive environment.

Gender

In 2012 it was recognised that women were not well represented at senior levels within our firm and that needed to change. It was clear that SW needed to be proactive in addressing its gender diversity in the workplace increasing the proportion of women in partnership.

  • 33% of SW Board members elected to the Executive Board are women
  • 22% of our partnership are women
  • 47% of our senior leadership group (Associate Directors and Senior Managers) are women
  • 52% of our current 2021 Graduate cohort is female
  • 50.5% of SW staff are female.

During the mental health quarter, SW employees are actively involved in Liptember and Movember and the Firm have been supporting them for the past three years.

Another key initiative SW are proud to support is Fitted for Work (FFW). FFW helps women experiencing adversity break through barriers to get and keep work. We have a comprehensive engagement plan with FFW that incorporates:

  • A 6 month Mentorship Program for women undertaking their Diplomas
  • Offering work placement and secondment opportunities that can lead to full time or part time employment
  • Assistance with resume writing, interview skills and basic business engagement skills
  • Clothing drives for corporate and business attire. These social benefits and impacts are wide reaching, as many women are primary caregivers that drive a more socially cohesive and prosperous society.

Indigenous

SW are currently working on creating a reconciliation action plan (RAP). This is part of our adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and framework. This initial phase of this project was completed in October 2019 following the completion of the ReThink Sustainability Index. Our sustainability journey is very important to us and an RAP will form part of this to create opportunities of employment of Aboriginal people.

Cultural diversity

Since launching the Cultural Diversity and Awareness Program (CDAP) in 2015, there has been an increase in engagement to a score that is significantly above the industry benchmark. In addition, SW have achieved outstanding gains in employee retention.

THE CDAP provides all SW employees the opportunity to improve their skills across their complete range of abilities, while offering an interesting and evolving client list for all staff with global exposure. SW has an active program for both international internships and secondment opportunities to ensure that our staff can broaden both their professional and social skills.

Some key statistics from a recent Engagement Pulse survey include:

  • 26 different ethnicities were identified
  • 88% of staff identified as Australian or Chinese and the remaining 22% were a mix from Europe & UK, Africa, Asia and Oceania
  • 35 people identified with more than 1 ethnicity
  • 8 languages are spoken (other than English)
  • 69 people are able to provide translation assistance
  • 25% of our people speak conversational Mandarin as a minimum
  • The number of employees who speak a dialect of Mandarin or Cantonese has lifted from less than 5% to 25% in just over two years, and an increasing number of employees using these skills daily to liaise with clients and complete translation work for their teams. The ability to offer this capability to both employees and clients is a testament to the diversity of SW and is a sign of the projected growth to be expected over the next two years.
