Jessica Ni

Jessica Ni, Consultant – Assurance and Advisory

Your background?

I was born and raised in Melbourne where I chose Accounting as one of my VCE subjects in Year 12. From there, I continued down this Commerce path and studied Accounting and Finance at The University of Melbourne. I was lucky enough to be a part of the Summer Vacation Program in my penultimate year and was consequently offered a Graduate position as a Consultant when I graduated.

Currently, I have worked at SW for 8 months and it was been an extremely fulfilling experience. I am surrounded by hardworking like-minded people and they motivate me to continue to strive for excellence every day.

What’s your role at SW

SW is an Australian owned advisory and accounting firm who deliver a range of professional services, with Assurance and Advisory, Business Advisory and Tax as the main three divisions.

What is unique to SW is its member alliance with SW International, which creates special opportunities to connect and work with clients from SW China, the largest indigenous Chinese domestic accounting practice. This gives SW an edge in accessing the Asia-Pacific market and in developing relationships with large influential players in many industries.

Specifically, in Assurance and Advisory, SW offers both risk management and IT advisory services, and external and internal audit. Our goal is to provide tailored local knowledge and advice to clients and ensure they reach and achieve their strategic objectives and to build their confidence to continue to thrive in the future.

3 pieces of advice for students?

  • Be genuine - Let your personality shine through. It is important for you to see if you can really align yourself with the company and for recruiters to see if you are a good culture-fit.
  • Participate in extra-curricular activities - Not only is this a great way to make friends and meet all kinds of different people, but a fun way to expand and discover new hobbies.
  • Don’t be afraid of rejection - We all have to start somewhere and it is always helpful to think of these experiences as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Lawrence Dang-Nguyen

Lawrence Dang-Nguyen, Consultant, Business and Private Client Advisory

Your Background?

I was born in Melbourne and grew up here throughout my whole life. I went to Melbourne University majoring in Accounting and Finance. After graduating with a bachelor of commerce I took a gap year travelling with friends and family and learning a lot about different cultures. To me that year was one of the most memorable time because it gave me a new perspective on life especially when traveling to developing countries and seeing people that were not as fortunate as we are in Australia but still be able to have a fulfilled life.

After the year, I started working in a small accounting firm which gave me a peek into the life of an accountant and gave me a strong tax foundation. I then went to apply for SW and went through a number of interview stages and was very fortunate to be chosen to be a graduate for SW in 2020. Due to Covid-19 we only worked in the office for 3 weeks and then started working from home which was challenging at first especially for us graduates who are just starting off and don’t know much. But eventually through the great support from SW, we were able to adapt working from home.

What’s your role at SW?

SW provides clients with assistance on tax and accounting matters and my area of responsibility is helping clients with their payroll.

I am in the Business and Private Client Advisory division but my team specialises in payroll for clients. Our division consists of various tasks ranging from providing tax returns to all types of entities to doing financial statements and providing financial advice. My team, however provides assistance with the client’s payroll which consists of various tasks including assisting clients with their single touch payroll, assisting them in paying their employees including taking care of their PAYG withholding, superannuation, etc.

I am very fortunate to be in a team that performs different tasks every day and doesn’t do the same thing which can be very boring in my opinion. In certain days, I would help with the client’s credit card reconciliation for several of their directors, prepare their payroll tax, working papers for their employee’s back pay calculations, financial statements, tax returns, activity statements and consolidation working paper. The work that I do is really rewarding and I get to learn something new every day.

3 pieces of advice for students?

  • Join as many clubs in university because that is where you can make a lot of friends and can network with a lot of different types of people from different courses.
  • Have a work life balance and work on your social skills because that is what firms are looking for these days and not just your score.
  • Apply for internships when you are in university because a lot of firms prioritise experience when looking at applicants.

Joy Hsieh

Joy Hsieh, Consultant – Assurance and Advisory

Your Background?

I grew up in Melbourne and went to MacRobertson Girls High School. During high school I was a keen debater who thought I was definitely going to study law at university, but I had a wonderful accounting teacher whose passion for the field really piqued my interest at the time. I soon found myself taking interest in accounting, which led to me choosing to study a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne. I started applying for vacationer programs in my second year of university where I was offered a vacationer role at SW. The application process for SW was similar to most professional services firms, but what I really appreciated about the firm was that the People and Culture team moved through the application process in a quick manner, and were very communicative throughout the entire process – anyone who’s been through a similar recruitment process will know the anxiety that comes with waiting for a response to that phone interview you attended over a month ago!

The summer vacation program at SW ran over 6 weeks, where I was given the opportunity not only to work on external audit engagements straight off the bat, but also participate in the firm’s Social Club events and really get a feel for what the culture at SW is like. I enjoyed participating in the vacationer program, and accepted the graduate position which was offered to me shortly after the vacationer program ended.

What’s your role at SW?

SW is an Australian owned advisory and accounting firm which has offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and is also part of the SW International network which has offices across 14 countries and regions globally. I work as a graduate consultant in the Assurance and Advisory division in Melbourne. The Assurance and Advisory division at SW offers both external and internal audit services including IT advisory. So far I have only worked on external audit engagements, which involve examining the financial statements of an entity to ensure that they provide a true and fair view of the entity’s operations.

As a graduate, I help out on a lot of the sampling and testing that is performed as part of the risk response stage of the audit, however I have also been involved in the planning phase by attending client interviews to gain a thorough understanding of the client’s business processes and functions. Working on external audit engagements has enabled me to develop an in-depth view into our clients’ business operations and really get to know how different businesses function and operate.

3 pieces of advice for students?

  • Actively engage with the activities and clubs offered at university – I was very much a passive student during university, who preferred to stay at home and watch all my lectures online, which led to me missing out on the diverse range of events and activities which took place on campus – something I definitely regret now!
  • Take advantage of internship/vacationer opportunities – these are your chance to get a preview of what it’s like working in a particular service line and explore your options before it comes time to apply for graduate roles.
  • Have an open mind and a positive attitude – starting to consider your career path during university can be daunting, especially once you’ve started applying for roles and possibly been rejected from a couple. Learn from each experience and take on any feedback you receive during the process with a positive attitude.

Social Responsibility

SW

ShineWing Australia

At SW, we are committed to giving back to our community and have an established Co2 Committee who drive our dedicated CSR initiatives. We encourage representatives from all levels, divisions and locations to get involved and make a difference to an area that matters to them most!

Currently we are active in supporting a range of charities and activities such as:

Matt Oakey

Matt Oakey, Partner – Business and Private Client Advisory

"To me, there are multiple reasons why our Co2 Committee makes a difference. It’s firstly about raising awareness and educating our people, our partners and our broader client networks about issues that affect our community. And to take on initiatives that create real impact and awareness within our community and for our people.

As part of the Co2 Committee I have participated in The Vinnies CEO Sleepout for the past four years. This one-night event helps to raise much needed awareness for the many Australians that experience homelessness. The challenge of sleeping just one night on the cold concreate during Winter with other SW Partners, has provided us all with thoughtful perspective for just how tough some Australian’s sleep every night."

Josie Ryan

Josie Ryan, Manager – Assurance and Advisory

"Co2 provides an opportunity for the firm to connect through initiatives outside the normal course of business that are aimed at promoting wellbeing and giving back to the community. We make a difference by seeking out opportunities to get involved that everyone can participate in, while also allowing committee members to connect and promote activities that are important to us."
