For our design stream, we're looking for graduates with degrees in the following subjects:

  • user research 
  • digital experience 
  • digital media. 

We’re also looking for graduates with a degree in any of these subjects and related areas: 

  • accessibility
  • communication
  • design innovation
  • design thinking 
  • philosophy
  • psychology 
  • sociology 
  • web design. 

If you have any of the above degrees, you can apply to both our service design and generalist streams. If you’re assessed as suitable for both streams, we’ll try to match you in the service design stream first. 

Once you start, you’ll stay in the service design stream for the duration of the program. 

Range of work

In the design stream, your role will support the delivery and operation of digital platforms and systems that improve government service delivery for the Australian community. 

You may work on a range of projects and tasks which could include: 

  • Using evidence-based approaches to help create accessible solutions. These will be based on users’ needs, aims and behaviour that meet Australian Government standards and guidelines. 
  • Applying user centred design/user experience design (UX) methodology to deliver enterprise outcomes and improvements to stakeholder and user experiences. 
  • Participating in user research to design simple, effective and accessible services and make recommendations to inform design solutions. 
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative user research to understand and define current and future user needs, behaviours and motivations. 
  • Helping develop design assets such as user flow, prototypes and wireframes. As well as other assets for proof of concept, usability testing and validation of designs with users. 
  • Contributing to the development and continual enhancement of digital products. 
  • Helping to give advice on digital accessibility. This includes conducting assessments against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and other relevant standards.

Eligibility 

To be eligible for the program, you must be an Australian citizen.

You’ll need to have successfully passed and completed:

  • an undergraduate degree within the last 5 years
  • a postgraduate degree within the last 5 years.

If you got your degree overseas, you’ll need to have it recognised by the Department of Education.
