How to Refresh Your Graduate Resume + Cover Letter for Graduate Programs in 2026

Your resume is your highlight reel. Your cover letter is your trailer.

With graduate program applications opening now and ramping up through February and March, you want both to say: "This person can learn fast and contribute from day one." Not: "I once breathed near a group assignment."

This guide is for Australian final-year and penultimate-year students (and recent grads) who want a fast, clean refresh for graduate jobs in Australia - without turning into a corporate robot.

The graduate resume

1) Keep it one page (two if you truly need it)

Grad hiring is high volume. Make it easy to scan:

  • Clean headings
  • Consistent formatting
  • Plenty of white space
  • No chunky paragraphs

Quick checklist

  • Save as PDF (unless the portal asks for Word)
  • File name: FirstName_LastName_Resume_2026.pdf
  • Readable font (10.5–12pt)
  • Top of page: name, mobile, email, location (city/state)

Skip: photo, date of birth, full address.

ATS-friendly formatting (worth doing)

Applicant tracking systems (ATS) can struggle with fancy layouts. To keep your application readable:

  • Avoid columns, text boxes, icons, and embedded logos
  • Use simple headings: Education, Experience, Projects, Skills
  • Keep bullet points as real text (not images)
  • If an employer asks for .docx, follow that instruction

2) Profile summary: 3–4 lines of useful hype

Your summary isn't your life story - it's your positioning.

Template

Commerce example

Final-year Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) student graduating Nov 2026, seeking graduate roles in banking or risk. Strong analytical skills developed through Excel-based modelling projects and part-time leadership in retail. Motivated by solving problems with data and communicating insights clearly.

IT example

Penultimate-year IT student graduating 2026, seeking software engineering graduate roles. Built full-stack projects using React, Node and SQL, and enjoy translating messy requirements into working features. Known for calm problem-solving and strong team communication.

Engineering example

Final-year Mechanical Engineering student graduating 2026, seeking graduate roles in energy or manufacturing. Experience applying modelling and design principles in capstone projects, with strengths in structured problem-solving and stakeholder communication.

3) Put education near the top (usually)

If you're still studying, Education should typically sit near the top.

Include:

  • Degree + major(s)
  • University
  • Expected graduation date
  • WAM/GPA if strong or required
  • Awards/scholarships (if relevant)
  • 3–6 relevant subjects (optional—don't overdo it)

If you have strong, relevant industry experience (e.g. 12+ months in-field): you can put Experience first.

Pro tip: If you're worried about grades, don't hide, just don't spotlight. Load the rest of your resume with proof of skills.

4) Experience: convert "tasks" into "impact"

Recruiters don't hire based on tasks completed—they hire based on outcomes.

Use: Action verb + what you did + how you did it + result

Before

  • Worked as a team member in a café.

After

  • Coordinated orders and customer enquiries during peak periods, improving handover clarity and helping the team maintain service targets in busy shifts.

(Use numbers if you genuinely have them: "served ~X customers per shift", "trained X new starters", "processed X orders/day".)

Commerce examples

  • Analysed weekly sales trends in Excel and recommended reorder changes that reduced peak-period sell-outs.
  • Presented a case competition recommendation to a panel, translating analysis into a clear go/no-go decision.

IT examples

  • Built a REST API in Node.js with input validation and basic tests, reducing bugs during demo week.
  • Collaborated in an agile team of 5 using Jira, shipping features across two sprints and incorporating user feedback.

Engineering examples

  • Completed design calculations for a structural concept using Excel and standards guidance, identifying a load case issue that reduced estimated material usage.
  • Produced a test plan and documented results, improving repeatability and clarity for future iterations.

5) Add a projects section (gold for grads)

Projects show how you think and work with others, and they're especially useful for internships, student jobs, and grad program applications.

For each project, include:

  • What it was: capstone, app, policy brief, design project
  • Your role: what you owned
  • Tools/methods: Python, CAD, Excel, stakeholder interviews, etc.
  • Outcome: result, grade, users, impact

6) Skills: keep it real (and categorised)

Split skills into:

  • Technical: Excel, SQL, Power BI, Python, CAD, MATLAB, MS Project…
  • Professional: stakeholder communication, prioritisation, teamwork

If you list it, be ready to explain where you used it.

Either way: a strong letter (or strong answers) can lift you out of the "same same" pile.

The 3-paragraph cover letter that works

Paragraph 1: Why this graduate program?

Template

I'm applying for the [Program Name] because I'm keen to start my career in [role family/stream] and I'm drawn to [specific program detail]. I'm particularly interested in [rotation/stream/team] because [real reason tied to your interests].

Good specifics include:

  • Rotations / structured learning
  • Public impact (government)
  • Major projects (engineering/infrastructure)
  • Innovation/customer focus (tech, banking)
  • Training / mentoring approach

Paragraph 2: Why you? (prove it)

Pick two strengths that match the role and prove them with mini examples.

Template

I'd bring strength in [skill 1], demonstrated when I [example + action + result]. I also have [skill 2], developed through [example], where I [action] and achieved [result].

Keep it tight. Numbers help.

Paragraph 3: Close with confidence

Template

I'd love the opportunity to contribute my [skills] and grow through the program's [learning/rotations/support]. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Length: ¾ to 1 page.

If the application uses questions instead of a letter: use the same structure, just tighter.

Tailor fast (without losing your whole weekend)

You don't need 20 unique resumes. You need one strong base + smart swaps.

Tailor these 5 things each time

  1. Cover letter: update the employer + graduate program name
  2. Cover letter: include one specific "why this program" detail (rotation, stream, projects, values, impact)

  4. Cover letter + resume: feature one key proof point matched to a "must have" requirement

  • Master cover letter (and/or a master answers doc)
  • Transcript saved (official if required)

Your 5-day refresh plan (doable, not dramatic)

  • Day 1: resume structure + profile summary + education
  • Day 2: rewrite 6 bullets from tasks → outcomes (add numbers where possible)
  • Day 3: add projects + skills sections
