Why did you join the Bega Graduate program?
I was in my penultimate year when I had the opportunity to join Bega for a short internship. Although I was quite sceptical about the food industry and had the typical chemical engineering mindset of ending up in oil and gas, I tried to be open-minded and to my shock, I thoroughly enjoyed those three months. I had the pleasure of visiting four different processing facilities during that short period and got a front seat to how Australia’s favourite breakfast spread (Vegemite) is…

Diversity and Inclusion

At Bega, we are committed to embracing diversity by recognising and celebrating the strengths and uniqueness of our people and creating an environment where they can thrive and reach their full potential. Diversity and Inclusion is about building a workplace that's rooted in belonging. In order to drive real change, we're investing in the following strategic areas:
Developing Women Leaders
We seek the different skills and ideas women bring, believing gender-equal workforces perform better and are more productive.
Supporting Working Families
We actively support our team members with carers’ responsibilities so they can be their best whilst at work and at home.
Fostering Inclusive Leadership
We want our teams to include people of all different diversity elements, so we celebrate diversity and promote belonging through inclusion. We foster a workplace that supports active collaboration so that together, we can achieve improved performance and increased innovation.
A Day in the Life
What is your current role, and can you briefly summarise it?
I am a Supply Chain Graduate and have been with Bega for about six months now. I’ve been filling in (the Site Asset Care Planner) role which has been a good opportunity for me to learn. My day-to-day activities include scheduling preventative maintenance and working with production to plan when we can complete these activities on the lines. The other side of the role is managing and handling the external contractors that come in to do the servicing, for example, pressure testing of our pasteurisers or servicing of the homogenisers.
What site are you located and what is it like on site?
I am located at Wetherill Park and have found that everyone is really friendly at the site. I didn’t know anybody in the whole state when I first started so it has been good to go in and meet people. I am the only graduate at Wetherill Park out of the 2020/21 cohort, but there are two previous graduates: Jordan and Andy. They are both good to work with and to learn from. Everyone is also really accepting to the fact that I am still learning so it has been good.
How have you found the Bega graduate program so far?
It has been good to get out in industry and be able to do something rather than just go straight into a research type position after completing university. I like being able to learn from different trades and other engineers firsthand, so it has been awesome so far, I have really enjoyed it. The best part of it is the opportunity to meet so many new people while also developing myself.
What type of improvements are you looking at implementing?
We have a program called MEX that manages a lot of our maintenance. So, we have our preventative maintenances which is our routine servicing. Then we have breakdowns and one-off jobs that are raised through work orders. I am working on a preventative maintenance review to improve the work that we carry out on a day-to-day basis. I have been focusing on uncovering the opportunities for improvement and we will continue to push this on site for the next year.
How does it work in terms of repair?
Sunday is when all the packaging lines are down, and majority of the processing is down so we get a good opportunity to complete larger jobs. During the week, the packaging lines go down for a clean a couple of times which is another opportunity to complete maintenance. Extended shutdowns of equipment need to be planned far in advance to allow production to adjust the plan for the works.
What is the one thing you would tell someone on their first day of work?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! I was afraid for the first week and it made things really hard. People won't really care and look twice if you ask them a question.
Where do you see yourself growing with Bega?
There is lots of improvement opportunity at the Wetherill Park site so I can see myself contributing to the constant improvement and growth of this site overtime, particularly in the reliability and maintenance area.
Gender Equality

Bega has signed on to the 40:40 Vision which is an investor-led initiative to achieve gender balance in executive leadership across all ASX300 companies by 2030. This commitment includes making a pledge to achieve gender balance in executive leadership by 2030, publishing a plan to get there and reporting annually on our progress.
Social Responsibility
The Bega Group Greater Good strategy is aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with a focus on addressing the impacts of our business and where we can contribute to sustainable development – our products, our people and communities and our planet. Within this framework we have prioritised:
Bega Group makes a genuine difference in the regions where we operate by supporting local communities and encouraging their economic development. A priority is placed supporting the communities of our farmer suppliers and our staff. This takes place through a range of charitable events and sponsorships. Much of our corporate support is directed to regional areas, often supporting charities that assist members of the community experiencing difficult circumstances. A wide range of community projects are supported and include the areas of education, sport, community service, the arts and health.
We are proud of our ongoing partnership with Foodbank Our ongoing partnership with Foodbank allows us to support 2,950 frontline charities and 2,890 school breakfast programs to get over 86.7 million meals out to those who need it every year.
In FY2022, we donated 1,072,267 kilograms of products, equating to more than 1.9 million meals for Australians in need. In addition to this we produced over 230,000 litres of fresh white milk for Foodbank’s National Collaborative Supplier Program, which provides more certainty in their supply chain.
