Diversity & Inclusion

We believe that an inclusive and diverse workforce promotes safety, productivity and wellbeing, and underpins our ability to attract and retain employees.
Our ambition to achieve a more diverse and inclusive workplace is focused on four areas:
- embedding flexibility into the way we work
- encouraging and working with our supply chain partners to support our commitment to inclusion and diversity
- uncovering and taking steps to mitigate potential bias in our systems, policies and processes, and in behaviours through the Respectful Behaviour campaign
- ensuring our workplaces are safe for and attractive to a diverse range of people
We want our workplaces to be a place where everyone is respected and valued, a place that is an enjoyable and inclusive place to work.

What's your job about?
BHP owns and operates seven coal mines and one port in Queensland. My team, based in Brisbane, is responsible for delivering projects across these operations. Each project is worth up to twenty million dollars (this is just my team - in other parts of our business, BHP also has projects worth well over a billion dollars) and involves some engineering complexity.
A typical project involves buying a new piece of equipment, getting engineers to design all the bits that connect to it, and then all the work to install it and get it going.

Why Join Us?
BHP offers graduate opportunities commencing in February each year, as well as 12-week internships for uni students from their second to penultimate year. Given our size, we require people from a diverse range of backgrounds such as engineering, geoscience, technology, business and science (including health science and environmental science) degrees.
We look for people who thrive in team environment, are flexible and resilient under pressure, are eager to learn from others and can think creatively to solve real business problems.
At BHP we encourage our employees to grow, learn and develop their skills to reach their potential. You can expect plenty of challenges working at BHP and if you rise to the challenge, you can expect to enjoy an exciting and rewarding career.
Disability

BHP is proudly partnered with leading Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) organisations and institutions. We have extended our successful internship program to create ongoing roles with neurodiversity in mind. Nurturing several career pathways that acknowledge a variety of neurological conditions, including ASD. Our hiring and management practices now reflect BHP's focus on unlocking perspectives that view work differently. In partnership with the Autism Academy of Software Quality Assurance (AASQA), BHP has welcomed interns in roles for data science, software development and testing, engineering and environmental safety.
Alexandra Flannigan, a Perth-based employee, was recruited as part of the internship program and is now a Specialist Industrial Communications Engineer. She said, 'From day one, everyone at BHP really made me feel like I was part of the team. My opinions were listened to, my ideas were considered and everyone was just really nice to me. The symbol for autistic pride is a puzzle piece because it's hard for us sometimes to see where we fit in the bigger picture and because we're often so very different from the non-autistic people around us. I think that's really funny because I feel like my puzzle piece fits at BHP.'
In support of BHP's commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment, our Accessibility & Inclusion Network, Amber, was established in 2022. Amber is an employee-led network sponsored at the executive level, designed to drive change through leadership and influence. The network was named after the amber gem, which often contains fossilised material called "inclusions." These inclusions are one of the reasons amber is so coveted.
Our Amber Accessibility & Inclusion Network provides a platform for employees to share their perspective, connect with others who have similar experiences, and provide peer support. Amber is focused on those who identify as having any kind of disability, as well as carers and allies. The network also encompasses our already established [email protected] group, which supports all neurodivergent people at BHP, as well as our commitment to mental health and wellbeing.
BHP is acting across all our regions to ensure an accessible and inclusive workplace for people with disability.
Gender Equality

In 2016, BHP announced its goal to achieve gender balance by 2025. By aspiring for gender balance, BHP seeks to create a safer, more harmonious culture. BHP wants their workplaces to be a place where everyone is respected and valued, a place that is an enjoyable and inclusive place to work.
At 30 June 2022, women represented 32.3 per cent of BHP's employee workforce up from 17.6 per cent when they set its aspirational goal and are confident of achieving gender balance by the end of FY2025. BHP also improved its representation of women in leadership by 2.7 percentage points compared to FY2021, with 27.9 per cent female people leaders at the end of FY2022.
To help mitigate gender pay disparities, BHP have taken steps to reduce potential bias in remuneration at the time of recruitment and we conduct an annual gender pay review, the results of which are reported to the BHP Remuneration Committee.
Graduate Program
BHP's 24-month graduate program provides a balanced approach to technical and professional development which ensures that our graduates have well-rounded capabilities that will be the cornerstone of their career.

LGBTIQ+

BHP wants their workplaces to be a place where everyone is respected and valued, a place that is an enjoyable and inclusive place to work.
BHP has established an employee inclusion group, called Jasper, for their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and others (LGBT+) community and its allies.
The name of the group was inspired by the mineral rock jasper, which is known for its unique multi-coloured patterns. The group was formally endorsed by BHP's Global Inclusion and Diversity Council in 2017 and is sponsored by two BHP Executive team members.
Jasper has more than 2000 members and eight local chapters across Australia, South America, Asia the United States and Canada.
Jasper's aim is to drive a safe, inclusive and supportive work environment for everyone by providing advice on ways to reduce bias and ensure LGBT+ people are respected and valued irrespective of their sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex variability.
Jasper also celebrates days of significance, including IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia) and Wear It Purple Day (awareness day for young people).
In FY2021, Jasper's 'Bring your whole self to work' campaign advocated for visibility and inclusion of LGBT+ employees and contractors and underlined the importance of respectful behaviours.
In FY2022, we continued to close gaps for LGBT+ inclusion, such as releasing guidelines and implementing support for transgender and gender diverse recruitment.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders

Many of BHP's global operations are located on or near the traditional lands of Indigenous peoples. BHP acknowledges that they have a profound responsibility to recognise and respect their status as First Peoples.
BHP's Indigenous Peoples Strategy provides a global framework for how they engage with Indigenous peoples.
The Strategy focuses on 4 strategic areas: governance, economic empowerment, social & cultural support and public engagement.
BHP has partnership agreements in place with Traditional Owner Groups which contain commitments to education, training and employment. Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in BHP's Australian host communities is an important part of their social licence to operate and is a key element of their Inclusion and Diversity agenda and Mineral Australia's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
BHP was one of the first organisations in Australia to establish a RAP.
BHP employed 274 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees and apprentices over the duration of their last RAP.
BHP plans to increase Indigenous participation to 9.7% by 2027.
BHP encourages cultural understanding through cultural competency training, which 22,340 Australia-based employees have completed.
In demonstrating its support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, during a three-year period, contracts totaling more than $354 million were awarded by BHP's Australian operations to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses.
BHP has contributed over $52 million towards improved education, social and life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Social Responsibility
Sustainability is integral to how we contribute to social value creation. It is core to our strategy and sits at the heart of everything we do.
BHP has long made a huge contribution to Australia’s economic prosperity and continues to do so. The company also engages in voluntary social investment, now mainly through the BHP Foundation (a US-based charity). The Foundation aims to assist in the achievement of many of the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDGs) the United Nations announced in 2015. The Foundation and the company are focused on making progress on SDGs relating to climate action, quality education, reducing inequality and enhanced institutional governance of natural resources.
At BHP we have an inclusive & diverse workforce which promotes safety, productivity and wellbeing and underpins our ability to attract new employees. We employ, develop, and promote based on people’s strengths and do not tolerate any form of discrimination, bullying, harassment, exclusion or victimisation. Our systems, processes and practices are designed to support fair treatment for all people.
