About our program

Treasury offers currently enrolled university students, the opportunity of a paid internship to gain real-world experience while completing their studies. Vacancies can occur at various times according to business needs and may vary in duration.

You will work on challenging and impactful policies, programs, research and modelling that help shape the Australian economic landscape.

You will:

  • contribute to the broader work of the department
  • enhance your studies with practical skills and knowledge
  • complete your internship flexibly over an agreed period – placements are designed to balance work and your university studies
  • earn a competitive casual hourly rate of $40 per hour.

Casual intern roles may transition to non-ongoing employment for a specified term on completion of studies.

Who can apply

To be eligible for Treasury’s Internship Program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an Australian citizen
  • Currently enrolled at university studying a bachelor’s degree or above in:
    • economics
    • legal
    • finance / commerce
    • public policy
    • international relations
    • data
    • statistics
    • demography
    • actuarial studies
    • human resources or
    • studying any of the above as part of a bachelor’s degree
  • Have completed 18 months of university and have between 9 and 24 months remaining in your studies
  • Be performing consistently well over the course of your studies with a GPA of distinction or above
  • On acceptance into the program, be willing to:
    • obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance and
    • undergo any police, character, health or other checks required.

What you’ll work on

Internship roles are varied and matched to your field of study. You may:

  • develop legal, economic, demographic and other policy research, analysis and advice
  • prepare documents, correspondence and briefings (e.g. for ministers and senior executives)
  • assist in managing programs or projects
  • analyse data and produce economic forecasts and economic notes
  • provide secretariat support (e.g. for ministerial meetings)
  • support stakeholder relationships/engagement. 

Casual intern roles may transition to non-ongoing employment for a specified term on completion of studies.
