About this role

This role supports the optimisation of Queensland’s arterial and motorway networks through real-time traffic signal operations, smart motorway technologies, and traffic modelling. The position plays a vital role in improving traffic flow, responding to disruptions, and enhancing road user safety across the state.

Important information for Engineering graduates: engineering qualifications must be 4-Year Washington Accord accredited or have undergone assessment for accreditation through Engineers Australia. 

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Optimise arterial and motorway network operations through traffic signal planning and coordination.
  • Manage signal timing adjustments for planned and unplanned events to support real-time traffic flow.
  • Configure and oversee smart motorway systems including ramp signals, Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS), and Lane Use Management Systems (LUMS).
  • Respond to public and stakeholder enquiries regarding traffic signal and motorway operations.
  • Provide expert input across project stages—planning, design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Conduct traffic modelling using Signalised and Unsignalised Intersection Design and Research Aid (SIDRA) and LinSig to assess intersection performance.
  • Support development application assessments and prepare traffic sequence reports for legal and insurance purposes.
  • Identify and coordinate resolution of critical faults affecting network efficiency.

Specialisations and development:

  • Build proficiency in traffic signal operations, corridor optimisation, and smart motorway technologies.
  • Gain hands-on experience with STREAMS traffic management software.
  • Learn to interpret traffic signal drawings and apply relevant standards such as AUSTROADS and MRTS.
  • Develop traffic modelling skills using SIDRA and LinSig.
  • Strengthen capabilities in stakeholder communication, technical reporting, and operational analysis.
  • Understand the role of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) devices in road operations and their integration into network management.

Technical skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering (4-year Washington Accord), with interest in traffic and ITS, completed within the last 3 years, or
  • Bachelor of Civil or a relevant post-graduate qualification within the last 12 months, or
  • If your Bachelor’s degree was completed at a University which was not part of the Washington Accord for any part of the period you studied, you will need to provide evidence from Engineering Australia that your skills and knowledge meet the same standard for your application to be considered.
