FTI Consulting

Christina Pelendage-Perera

Job Title: Associate, Corporate Finance & Restructuring
University Attended: Monash University
Degree qualification: Bachelor of Business & Bachelor of Education- Secondary (Honours)
Year of graduation: 2020

What's your job about?

At FTI Consulting, the Corporate Finance & Restructuring Team undertakes numerous services across different industries. Currently, I am involved in formal insolvencies such as liquidations and voluntary administrations. I have partaken in a creditor meeting where I prepared formal documents and I had the opportunity to prepare the minutes while conducting the meeting. At some stages, the tasks from engagements can be challenging but rewarding as we have the support of colleagues to assist us to meet the outcome together.

What's your background?

I grew up in Melbourne and completed my schooling at Sacred Heart Girls’ College. I was uncertain of the career I wanted as I had ambitions to be either a teacher or work in the business industry. Hence, I chose to complete a double degree in Education and Business as it would broaden my knowledge and hopefully direct me to either path. During my time at university, I had experience working as a pre-service teacher and working part-time at an accounting firm. I was able to gain exposure to both degrees and conclude that I am most passionate about business and would like to pursue that.

Why FTI Consulting?

I was most keen to work in insolvency, and when I heard about FTI Consulting, I knew I had to apply! I am passionate to work in a global company where I can work across different engagements and network with staff from various regions.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

At FTI Consulting, I get the opportunity to be exposed to various client engagements. Each day at work, I am given the opportunity to challenge my understanding and develop my knowledge in areas I find thought-provoking. I embrace and articulate these challenges by finding solutions or alternative outcomes to improve the result.

What has been challenging?

Initially, when I commenced, I found it challenging due to my lack of experience in insolvency. However, with the support of my colleagues and training conducted by FTI Consulting, I have been able to manage the tasks efficiently and effectively. This training significantly assisted me with my daily tasks, as it would be quite challenging to do without the background knowledge in insolvency.

What support is given to you?

As a new graduate, I was given a “buddy” and a mentor who provided me with ongoing support. However, my colleagues have also significantly assisted me on my learning and development journey. FTI Consulting also has extensive programs and encourages us to undertake additional studies such as the Chartered Accountants Program and ARITA courses.

What advice would you give current students interested in working for FTI Consulting?

My advice to anyone looking to obtain a graduate position is to thoroughly research. Know the inside and out of the company and reach out to people who work within the industry. Networking and creating connections with others are great ways to understand the role and culture that you will involve yourself in.

Ben Van Heurck

Job title: Associate, Corporate Finance & Restructuring
University Attended: University of Western Australia
Degree qualification: Bachelor of Accounting & Finance
Year of graduation: 2020

What's your Job About?

As an associate in FTI Consulting’s Corporate Finance & Restructuring team, we work with distressed companies to help stabilise, turnaround and recover value for a multitude of stakeholders involved. My current day-to-day involves juggling between lodgements to the ATO or ASIC that are due, entering receipts and payments for the jobs that I am working on, and building out a financial model for a local prospective mine site. If I find some free time, I like to keep up to date on the Australian Financial Review as well as any recent insolvency case law that has come through. Other jobs I have worked on involve company reports, liquidations, and an independent expert report.

What's your background?

I was born and raised in Perth, completing schooling at Christ Church Grammar School in 2015. With a strong passion for the ocean, I had no thoughts about leaving the greatest coast Australia has to offer. I took an uncommon path once finishing high school, I studied part-time at the University of Western Australia while working two jobs as an accountant and a bartender. I then spent most of my Uni holidays exploring WA and travelling overseas.

Why FTI Consulting?

I first learned about FTI through a friend that had done work with them. After initial research, I learned that they are one of the top firms in the Corporate Finance & Restructuring field and a global organisation. I found myself largely drawn to FTI Consulting due to its large network and thus the range of opportunities that would be available to me.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

It’s not just the variety of companies that I get to work with at FTI Consulting that I enjoy, it’s the types of engagements I get to work on. The work could be trading on a company in voluntary administration, distributing dividends to shareholders, building a financial model, or drafting reports. The greatest part of any engagement is the end, where you can sit back and see the value FTI Consulting, and you have added for all stakeholders involved.

What has been challenging?

The most challenging aspect of being an associate for me has been managing competing tasks such as training sessions, job deadlines, and networking events. A common challenge with this is the work-life balance. FTI Consulting is a huge advocate for a healthy work-life balance and encourages working flexibly. The work we do in Corporate Finance & Restructuring comes in peaks and troughs. In the end, it is down to the individual to manage themselves personally.

What support is given to you?

There are endless training resources to help you hit the ground running; during the first few months after joining, we had lots of resources and training sessions available as well as a buddy to help you settle in. Other training programs that are held include sessions run by your peers as well as restructuring teams from well-known law firms coming into the office to share their knowledge.

FTI Consulting also generously supports and encourages their employees to undertake the Chartered Accountant program which provides a substantial amount of knowledge.

What advice would you give current students interested in working for FTI Consulting?

I recommend that if you’re a student who is thinking about applying for a graduate role in the industry to get out there and make yourself known. Speak to past graduates, attend University events where employers are present, these networking activities can really help you gain an understanding of where you would like to work and the people you will be working with.

How do you make your impact?

At FTI Consulting, I have been provided an opportunity to make a meaningful impact with the work I do, often the stakeholders we are working for are regular “mum and dad investors”. Being able to provide recovery and return value to these stakeholders is a really rewarding feeling.

FTI Consulting

Munirah Azhar

Job Title: Associate, Corporate Finance & Restructuring
University Attended: University of New South Wales (UNSW)
Degree qualification: Bachelor of Commerce (Finance/Taxation)
Year of Graduation: 2020

What's your job about?

Corporate Finance & Restructuring is one of the five segments at FTI Consulting, providing a breadth and depth of expert advice to institutions across the corporate life cycle, both to healthier firms looking to remain competitive (business transformations and transaction advisory) and those finding themselves in distress and seeking a formal solution (turnaround and restructuring).

The most exciting thing about my role is the clientele and the unique situations that present themselves in each engagement. No two days are identical, and I’m always being kept on my toes. Recently, for example, I worked on three different projects running concurrently. This involved the distribution of final dividends to creditors and shareholders as well as maintaining communications with them, reviewing legal documents to determine entitlement to dividend payouts, and completing a due diligence report as part of a proposed refinancing. I was also, at the same time, working on research, which further honed my analysis and report-writing skills for the abovementioned jobs.

What's your background?

I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where the days are hot, and the food is even hotter! I completed my A-Levels back home and then moved to Sydney for university in 2017, where I did a degree in Finance and Taxation and undertook two internships – one in assurance focused on asset management, and another in corporate finance and investment banking. I then applied for the Graduate Program whilst completing my final internship.

Why FTI Consulting?

Having grown up being surrounded by investment bankers, my interest naturally lay in corporate finance. At the same time, I found myself enjoying the process-driven nature of the legal field, which meant that a role within corporate finance and restructuring would offer me that rare and optimal blend between finance and corporate law, which I found at FTI Consulting, and I could not be happier with my decision!

What's the coolest thing about your job? OR What is the most rewarding about your job?

The teams at FTI Consulting are highly mobile and curated to the job in question, which has given me great exposure to learn from different industry experts in retail, commodities, and even agribusiness, often simultaneously! The relatively flat structure also means that it is easy to raise your hand and voice your interest to work with a specific Senior Managing Director, industry, or project. The process is incredibly flexible, and I have always felt comfortable voicing my interests given how attentive the team is to everyone’s professional needs. One bonus is that the firm is proactive in participating in pro-bono work, which was one of my goals from the get-go: creating meaningful impact for organisations in communities we are a part of.

What has been challenging?

Whilst the work has been very intellectually stimulating, every engagement requires a slightly different skill set. There is a steep learning curve, but I think that giving it a red-hot go is the best way to get the most out of any project.  I’ve learned that frequently communicating expectations and concerns with my team allows me to produce the most meaningful work against time-sensitive deadlines. Another challenge has also been the handling of stakeholder relationships on engagements I work on (e.g., employees, creditors); seeing my seniors guide those difficult conversations has nonetheless helped me gain the necessary confidence to manage expectations in times of distress.

What support is given to you?

I’ve received extensive support both at a personal level through my buddy and coach, as well as at a national level through attending training sessions, detailing the processes involved in a formal restructuring appointment. FTI Consulting has also been incredibly encouraging in terms of undertaking further studies (e.g., the Chartered Accountants program, and for some, the CFA charter) by providing additional study leave. The firm also invites guest speakers who are experts within their own fields (e.g. insurance, restructuring and insolvency law, industry-specific financial modelling) to present at external training sessions. In terms of my mental well-being, my coach and the broader team have never hesitated to reach out to discuss any difficulties I may be experiencing with a particular project and have always emphasised the importance of work-life balance – an effort I greatly appreciated during lockdown periods.

What advice would you give current students interested in working for FTI Consulting?

Understand that, as a university student or graduate, you are currently in one of the most formative periods of your career and life in general. Gaining breadth and depth of experience and looking forward to the work you do prevails over becoming an expert in a specific field. Your attitude to work will help you attain that breadth and depth of experience, particularly if you are naturally inquisitive, love solving problems with lots of moving parts, and are motivated in a team environment. It will also allow for maximum optionality to decide which areas you would prefer to specialise in.

How do you make your impact?

One important reason why I decided to join Corporate Finance & Restructuring at FTI Consulting is the opportunity to essentially “run a business” in the trading-on period of a formal restructuring appointment. During this period the firm takes over a company’s day-to-day management of sales, creditors, payables, cash, and employees. I have also been a part of events with student associations, where I helped students at university understand the type of work consultants do (e.g., analysing financial statements for different projects).

A Day in the Life

FTI Consulting

Ariel Shavit

Job Title: Consultant – Economics & Financial Consulting
University: Monash University
Degree qualification: Bachelor of Commerce (Economics)
Year of graduation: 2021

7:00 AM

* Beep * The alarm goes off, and as my mind begins to register the necessary next step, I cherish the last few moments of warmth before leaving my bed and preparing to leave for the bus.

7:20 AM

My work laptop 'check'
Banana in my bag 'check'
Earphones 'check'
Attitude status: in need of a coffee
I'm all set to go and embark on my journey to work.

7:45 AM

After catching a short bus ride to the station, I stand on the busier-than-usual platform. Since office capacity restrictions were recently relaxed many more people have been making their way to the city and the pre-Covid hustle and bustle is returning. Often, I’ll listen to music on the train. My playlist consists mainly of 70’s and 80’s genre which ranges from Steely Dan to Pink Floyd. My friends often joke that I’m an old soul in a young body.

8:30 AM

I arrive at the office and drop off my bag at my desk. I greet my teammates and then go around the office to say hello to the other colleagues who are in today and have the morning chat. Recently I have been mainly working from home due to COVID restrictions, so I make an effort to introduce myself to everyone who I may have only seen virtually. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming.

FTI Consulting

8:40 AM

Back at my desk, I begin by going through any unread emails and plan out the tasks that I aim to complete today in a to-do list. The project I’m working on is creating a cost-benefit analysis for a shipping port. The economic model is ever evolving as we go through thorough deliberation among the team and constantly receive new information and direction from the client.

I find the work in the Economics & Financial Consulting segment is interesting and broad. One day I could be working on a valuation for a large multinational company by producing charts and graphs, another time writing up proposals in the tendering process for new work, and then working on a project such as the current one where I had to learn about port functions. The best part is that I am working alongside colleagues who are industry experts that provide me with a good balance of autonomy and guidance.

9:00 AM

I open Excel on one screen and on the other I have documents open that will accompany my analysis. I continue my work on the model and make good progress.

10:00 AM

It’s time for the daily coffee catch-up where we discuss the progression of the projects we are working on. Today we sit in the kitchen area with a nice view of the city behind us. As we indulge in coffee, I can sense all our moods have improved.

FTI Consulting

10:30 AM

I’ve returned to my desk, and I see my teammate in Sydney is online. I reach out to him on Teams to see if he can review a section of the work I have done. Over a share-screen video call we review the analysis, and he provides me with feedback. After the call, I proceed to implement the changes.

12:00 PM

It’s lunchtime and time to explore the local cuisine. One of the great advantages of going to work in the city is the large variety of food options. The local Mexican shop catches my attention. A burrito with extra slow-cooked beef is the way to go. How could I not…

Over lunch, a colleague is reading the newspaper and we have a discussion about the performance of the stock market and the emerging technologies that will prove to be valuable in an ever increasingly digitised world. I'm not into trading but this discussion has sparked my interest!

1:00 PM

After lunch, I continue with my earlier tasks and add commentary to a business case report I am working on. The economic model I am producing will accompany the report. Since I made additions to the model, I work to ensure the changes are reflected correctly in the report.

FTI Consulting

3:30 PM

I have a discussion with a colleague who is a Senior Director about some of the model inputs. The dialogue followed the Socratic method which I found helpful in unpacking and simplifying elements of the model.

4:30 PM

Today is casual Friday and we had an end-of-week virtual meeting with a few of our team members in Brisbane. We first discuss some business matters such as team performance and the projects that are lined up for next year. The Economic & Financial Consulting team has grown a lot in the past year, and it is exciting to hear of the great opportunities on the horizon.

The discussion then heads into more important topics. The most important being ‘what is the best way to prepare a potato’. After relentless debate and unsuccessful persuasion, it came down to team mash potato vs. team soggy fries. There was no compromise!

FTI Consulting

5:30 PM

I finalise my timesheets and ensure my to-do list is completed before I head out of the office. I am heading straight to the gym to get a workout in before Friday night dinner.

6:30 PM

I arrive at the gym and plan my session. It’s back and arms today, and I choose the bent-over barbell row as one of my main compound exercises. I enjoy getting physically active after work. I find that it’s a great way to decompress as it gives me time for myself.

FTI Consulting

7:45 PM

I arrive home, have a quick shower, and sit at the table to have dinner with my family. Tonight’s special is lentil soup with croutons.

9:30 PM

After dinner, I make my signature protein shake and make myself cosy on the couch. I decided to watch some YouTube and chat with my family about what they have planned for the week ahead.

11:00 PM

I make my way to bed to get a proper rest after a full-on day. It won’t be long before I’m asleep.

FTI Consulting

Erika Parry

Job Title: Associate, Forensic and Litigation Consulting
University: Queensland University of Technology
Degree qualification: Bachelor of Business (Major in Accounting and Minor in Forensic Accounting)
Year of graduation: 2020

7:00 AM

Since starting a full-time role, I have tried to become the sort of person who gets up early and goes to the gym. Unfortunately, today isn’t one of those days, so my alarm goes off at around 7am and I snooze it a few times before getting out of bed at 7.15am.

7:20 AM

I make my first (of many) coffees for the day and drink that as I get myself ready for work. This can take anywhere from 20 to 40mins and usually ends up in a mad dash for the 8am light rail.

8.40 AM

The Sydney office is right next to the light rail so it’s a quick walk into the office. My first stop is the kitchen to put my lunch in the fridge, grab my second coffee of the day and fill up my water bottle. I head to my desk where I change into my heels and catch up with a few of my colleagues. Since we introduced a hybrid working model, I don’t see my colleagues in the office every day, so when I do, it’s nice to have a quick chat.

9:00 AM

Time to start my workday. Although it’s cliché, there truly is no ‘typical’ day at FTI Consulting – some days I will be in and out of meetings and jumping from matter to matter, and other days I could be working on a single report or analysis for the whole day.
The first thing I do is complete my timesheet for the previous day. I like to write my timesheets on sticky notes and do them at least once a day to keep track of the different activities I perform for a few matters. I also use this time to reply to any emails that have come through for the morning.

9:30 AM

By 9.30, my coach (mentor) usually wants to grab a coffee, so we head downstairs to our favourite coffee shop. I get a coffee with my coach almost every day and during this time we talk about anything from client work to upcoming business development opportunities or even personal things. We’re both big bachelor/bachelorette fans, so today we talked about the most recent bachelorette episode.

FTI CONSULTING

9:45 AM

The first matter I’m working on today is a corporate dispute where we have been engaged to assess a company’s finance policies and practices against Australian accounting standards, as part of a shareholder class action. Our role is as a consulting expert, so we won’t be issuing an independent expert report like some of our other matters, though we will be presenting our findings to the Board of Directors of this listed company. Today we’re discussing our progress and analysis with our Senior Managing Director (which is the equivalent of Partner in other firms) in charge of this matter and consider other areas of analysis. I quickly finish off some analysis and provide an update to the matter manager.

11:00 AM

We head into a conference room to set up the call with the matter Senior Managing Director, who is based in Melbourne. The Forensic and Litigation Consulting team is located in Sydney and Melbourne, so often engagements can involve both states. We present our initial findings and the draft deliverable structure to the Senior Managing Director. She asks lots of insightful questions and provides suggestions on how she thinks the template could be set out to be easier to understand from the lawyer’s or end-client’s perspective. Throughout the meeting I take notes to send to my team after.

12:30 PM

After sending through the notes from the meeting and having a quick debrief with the matter manager about next steps, I head to lunch. I brought lunch today, but I received a message from another colleague saying she wanted to buy lunch, so I join her for a walk to the food court. We head back upstairs to eat in the kitchen with a few colleagues from other teams (I mean how can you say no to that view!).

FTI Consulting

1:30 PM

During lunch, I receive an email from a Senior Managing Director on another engagement letting me know we received approval from the client to proceed with additional investigation and preparation of a report, so I head back to my desk to work on that for the rest of the afternoon. One of the great things about consulting is that every engagement and engagement team is often different. While the matter I was working on this morning was with three others, this matter is primarily just myself and the Senior Managing Director.

This engagement is a confidential investigation into suspected fraudulent employee expense claims. Although I had already completed an analysis earlier this month using the bank statements and expense claim documentation, the client is wanting to get a better understanding of how the fraud occurred. Working with our forensic technology team, we obtain email data from the two suspects and uploaded all the data to Relativity. Relativity is an eDiscovery platform used to host and interrogate information. Using this software, I conduct targeted searches on all the documents to recreate the chain of correspondence between the two suspects for each expense claim. In particular, the client wanted to know who originally created the spreadsheets that were submitted in the expense claim – using this software we can review the metadata on the excel file to see which user originally created it and when.

I give the Senior Managing Director a quick call (as he was working from home today) to update him on my findings and confirm that he’s happy for me to start drafting up a report. I draft the skeleton of the report and ask one of my colleagues with more investigation experience for help where I get stuck. Despite the engagement team being just myself and the Senior Managing Director, everyone in my team is always happy to help and provide me opportunities to gain experience.

6:00 PM

As the two matters I was working on today are not super urgent and I don’t have any business development or networking events tonight, I head home via the light rail.

6:45 PM

Once I’m home, I quickly get changed and head off to my yoga studio. Depending on deadlines and generally how busy I am, I try to go to four or five classes a week.

8:00 PM

After a quick stop at Woollies to pick up any missing ingredients, I head home to make dinner. My housemate and I take turns cooking and tonight’s menu is Japanese curry.

9:00 PM

While I was in Shavasana (the final resting pose in yoga), I thought of another avenue of investigation for the matter I was working on this afternoon. I always take my laptop home with me in case I have to work from home the next day, so I do a little bit more research and report writing before bed. I don’t often work this late, but sometimes there may be an urgent matter in our line of work. I do get recognition for the hard work I put in, which is nice.

10:30 PM

Time for shower and bed. After my very in-depth skincare routine, I settle down to go to sleep. I aim to go to sleep before 11.30 but after falling down the rabbit hole that is TikTok, I very rarely fall asleep before midnight. Also, tonight I’ve packed my gym gear in anticipation of going to the gym tomorrow morning!

FTI Consulting

Similar to other professional services firms, we have more work to do to reshape our pipelines in order to attract and retain top female talent.

We recognise this as an area of opportunity to improve through hiring, development and retention initiatives, and to support our aspirations we have introduced the following programs and policies:

  • Our Executive Committee has committed to building three-year pipelines of potential female Senior Managing Director candidates so that we have a strong pool of talent for promotion
  • Succession planning and hiring for Executive Committee roles must include qualified female candidates on the interview slate
  • We offer talent development opportunities to increase the percentage of women in senior roles
  • We commit to a 50/50 gender balance in graduate hiring
  • We enhanced parental leave policies globally and have flexible and hybrid work programs

In addition to the above policies and the initiatives outlined in the Diversity & Inclusion tab, we also have launched the FTI Consulting Women’s initiative (WIN).
