About Us

Jane Street works differently. We are a quantitative trading firm active on more than 200 trading venues across 45 countries. As a liquidity provider and market maker, we help form the backbone of global markets. Our approach is rooted in technology and rigorous quantitative analysis, but our success is driven by our people.

We are always recruiting top students and we invest heavily in teaching and training. The environment at Jane Street is open, informal, intellectual, and fun. People grow into long careers at Jane Street because there are always new and interesting problems to solve, systems to build, and theories to test. More than twenty years after our founding, it still feels like we’re just getting started.

Opportunities

Quantitative Trading (Full Time, Summer Internship, Australasia Summer Internship, Off-Cycle Internship)

Every day, we come to work with new problems to solve, new systems to build and new theories to test. We're always looking for people to join us and help come up with that next great idea. Our trading is based on our own proprietary models and on busy days we engage in over a million trades. Traders work in teams to seek out and trade on pricing inefficiencies, develop models, manage risk, investigate new products, and push into new business areas. Experienced traders teach and oversee the less-experienced. New traders serve as assistants while they learn the ropes, getting increasing responsibility as they demonstrate their ability to handle it.

These jobs are highly quantitative and technology driven. Trading candidates should be excellent quantitatively, with a strong understanding of probability and statistics. Candidates should be effective communicators in a close knit team setting, motivated, competitive and eager to learn. Previous experience or course work in finance, business, or economics is not required. We are interested in hiring responsible, motivated, adaptive, and logical thinkers with strong quantitative skills. All disciplines are encouraged to apply.

For Quantitative Trading interns, you will have the opportunity to learn about market making, trading and pricing financial derivatives. Our interns work with experienced traders and help research equities, derivatives, indices and financial markets. Intern education is supplemented with lessons in a classroom setting, where both trading theory and practice are covered. Interns are also encouraged to participate alongside firm traders in mock trading sessions.

Software Developers (Full Time, Summer Internship, Australasia Summer Internship, Off-Cycle Internship)

We are big believers in functional programming, using OCaml, a statically-typed functional programming language, as our primary development language. We also believe in the value of open source software, using it in our daily work and releasing hundreds of thousands of lines of our own code as open source.

Candidates for the developer role should have:

  • Top-notch programming skills
  • Deep experience with—and love for—technology. There’s no specific checklist; we use software to approach a variety of problems, so we’re interested in everything from machine learning to systems administration to programming language design.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Software development at Jane Street is highly collaborative, and we are looking for people who can work effectively in small, close-knit teams.

We don’t expect you to have experience with functional programming, OCaml, or finance; we’re happy to hire talented developers and teach them what they need to know.

For Software Development interns, you are given the opportunity to engage in software and research projects that have real and lasting impact and work on at least two projects in different areas, collaborating closely with full time developers.

Internships

Our summer internships usually run for 10-12 weeks in all three offices between May to September. For Australasia students, we have a summer internship program in our Hong Kong office between December to February for 10-12 weeks and you will also spend 3-4 weeks in New York to participate in training with other global interns. Off-Cycle internships are also available throughout the year in some offices; please refer to our Open Positions page for more information.
