Meet Stacy who is a former graduate!

lactalis

Stacy Tully - Project Engineer
(Graduate cohort - 2020)
Bendigo (VICTORIA)

1. Tell us about your role and what it involves?

After finishing my graduate year across the Lactalis Echuca and Lactalis Bendigo site, I took an ongoing position at Lactalis Bendigo as a Project Engineer. In my current role, I write scopes of work for our projects, manage contractors, and I’m responsible for a lot of the communication between the projects team, and the rest of the site.

2. How has the graduate program supported you in launching your career?

The graduate program is structured in a way that allows graduates to drive their experience in a way that aligns with their interests. As an engineering graduate, I had a keen interest on how the capital projects worked at Lactalis. My site manager made sure that I was able to be across all of the site projects, and that I got to spend time with the other engineers on site so I could learn from them also. Though I have spent most of my time with Lactalis working on capital projects, it was comforting to know that, if I found that engineering wasn’t the right fit, I would have had the opportunity to experience other sides of the business through the graduate program, should I of expressed the desire to do so.

3. What work have you been most excited by since starting at Lactalis Australia?

There are lots of improvements, and big projects going on at the Bendigo Lactalis site and I’m very grateful to have been involved. As stage one of our project is coming to completion, it is very satisfying to see all of the works that I wrote into a document last year, being almost finished in real life. The big days, where we’ve relocated tanks, or when we moved one of our pasteurisers, have been the most exciting days!

4. What's something that's surprised you with working at Lactalis Australia and your role?

What surprised me the most, was how quickly I was involved in the company. From my second week at Lactalis, I was helping write up capital expenditure proposals. The graduate program is very hands on, so you’re bound to learn lots, very quickly. I was also surprised by how supportive others on site would be, always making sure that if they personally couldn’t answer my questions, that they’d point me in the direction of someone who could.

5. What’s the coolest thing you have come across during your time with us?

I think being able to experience the actual plant first hand is a cool thing about this graduate role! It is a very rare day that I have to spend more time at my desk than away from it, and that suits me well. Dairy manufacturing itself is a very interesting process, and the mechanisms of the fillers are awesome to watch. The fact that I can take information from a drawing, and go out to the factory and compare it to what is there in real life, is a great way to learn!

A Day in the Life

Lactalis Australia

Meet John – John commenced with us in January 2020 as a Graduate Management Controller based in Brisbane.  Due to an internal promotion, John is now based at our Rowville factory in Victoria!

lactalis

John Stolp - Rowville Site Management Controller

Rowville – Victoria

My role within Lactalis Rowville as Site Management Controller is very hands-on. I work directly with the Site Manager in an attempt to not only review performance in terms of manufacturing efficiency, but engage with the leadership team in the hopes to build a stronger more productive work environment. We construct variance analysis calculations to identify areas that require more focus and work with the stakeholders directly on how to set SMART (specific, measureable, attainable, relevant and time-based) goals. A big part of my role is to help the site as a whole set future goals in the form of budgets as well as predictive analysis through forecasting.

Working with production teams and being involved with the processing and packing of all the different varieties of milk we produce and the ability to see where the numbers come from physically, adding a tangible aspect, makes my role so much more rewarding.

Opportunities within the company for career progression, not only for myself, but in every area within the business and the support that comes with it. An honourable mention: I was surprised to find out just how much goes into the process of making milk safe for everyone from farm to bottle, it is a lot more complicated than I originally thought.

The filling machines are mesmerising, especially the PET bottle filler running at full blast. I could stand there for hours looking at how everything is so perfectly put together.

My Ideal Day:

I am an early bird > Wake up bright and early for a quick gym session (5am), then breakfast and coffee with my wife and doggies before I head to work at 7:30am. I like to spend my first hour on the floor with the production team before the team meeting at 9am, then I will spend a few hours working on various items (it always differs). I like to have lunch at 12 after which I will spend some more time within the different departments. Around 3:30pm I will go through emails and complete any last minute tasks before I head home at 4/4:30pm. In the afternoon we like taking our two pups for a walk and have dinner, however, I am still doing my CPA so I usually like spending time studying before bed.

White Ribbon Australia

White Ribbon is Australia’s only national, male-led campaign which recognises the positive role that men play in putting an end to men’s violence against women. It fosters and encourages male leadership in the prevention of violence against women, based on the understanding that most men are not violent.

Lactalis Australia has been working with White Ribbon since 2015, when employees chose to support this cause by holding fundraising drives and raising awareness of how Lactalis Australia and its staff could make a real difference.

Lactalis Australia

St Vincent de Paul Society

An association which began with one employee “sleeping rough” for the night, has morphed into a significant partnership between ‘Vinnies’ and Lactalis Australia.

Since 2012, Lactalis Australia staff have been putting their hands up to get involved in different Vinnies’ activities and initiatives, their enthusiasm underpinned by the company’s strong commitment to team engagement.

Lactalis Australia

Ronald McDonald House Charities

Lactalis Australia has had a long running association with Ronald McDonald house, supporting the organization through our annual Charity Golf Day.

Like our association with St Vinnies, the relationship began not at a corporate level, but via the energy and enthusiasm of a couple of Lactalis Australia team members - Karen Abell and Andrew Lynch. Ronald McDonald House had been planning to invest in a large commercial refrigerator where families living in the house could store their food. However Karen and Andrew went a step further, rallying the support of Lactalis Australia’s generous suppliers to design, fund, and install a purpose built cold room facility.

Lactalis Australia

Food Bank

For an organization like Lactalis Australia, Corporate Social Responsibility plays out in many different ways.

It can mean respecting and protecting the environment, or acting with integrity while conducting business with our suppliers.  Or it can involve supporting our farmers, during extreme weather events, such as floods or droughts, like we did in Queensland after the dramatic floods of 2011. Similarly in Victoria, where our three year milk supply agreement guaranteed a minimum farm gate price that protected our suppliers from the massive decline in milk price during the 2016/17 season.

All of these business practices are part of who we are as a business, and how we want to be regarded in the community. They demonstrate true social responsibility.
