Master of United States Studies Alumni
After interning at the National Republican Congressional Committee in the US and returning from an exchange in Washington DC, Matt knew he wanted to study American politics and policy. But when choosing where to study, it was the US Studies Centre’s unique offerings that attracted him. “We studied everything from sustainability with adjunct professor Robert Hill to American exceptionalism and US economic policy. The program was detailed, critical, and had a strong international perspective.”
But beyond the subjects, Matt says the staff and students involved in the program were the greatest draw card. This was true both at events with high-profile academics, business leaders, and politicians, as well as in the classroom. “Everyone was enthusiastic, committed, and engaged. The program was about more than just courses and grades; it was also about building a strong, professional community.”
The connections Matt made at the Centre have continued to help him over the course of his career.
“The program helped in my roles advising NSW premiers and treasurers in international policy and sustainability and also helped give me the confidence to achieve my goals in the workplace. The friendships and contacts I made in the Master’s program have continued well beyond graduation.”

G’Day USA American Insights Tour
Sabrina had studied in the United States before undertaking the G’Day USA American Insights Tour, having completed an exchange in New York as part of her undergraduate degree. But although she had enjoyed her time, she was looking for something more. “What the American Insights Tour offered was an opportunity to experience the business culture and environment firsthand.”
She said the program exceeded her expectations, with site visits, high-level meetings and intimate events with key people from a range of fields. Travelling with a small group across the United States further enhanced her experience. “The diversity of the group meant that I learnt more while I was there and made very close friends. Having a range of international and Australian students was a real plus.”
Sabrina is now pursuing her career options in the United States and using the networks she built as part of the program to help advance her career. “It really shifted my path. Getting experience in the workplace and meeting potential future employers was invaluable.”
