Thermo Fisher Scientific

Meet Jodie Lynn, 2020 Cohort

Jodie, tell us about your experience with the Leadership Program and what it involves?

The Leadership Program really allowed me to immerse myself into Thermo Fisher Scientific and learn how such a large multinational company works and develop my skills and push me out of my comfort zone.

The two-year program encompasses three rotations of eight months in different business functions, plus a plethora of other development opportunities. I studied biomedical science and commerce in University, so I felt more comfortable starting in the finance rotation. But my second and third rotations were in marketing and sales respectively, which really challenged me but taught me invaluable skills that I would have never learnt if I only worked in the finance space. Outside the rotations, I was also involved in cross-functional process improvement projects, attended multi-day learning courses on topics spanning process improvement to digital marketing and had regular meetings about learning and career development.

How has the graduate program supported you in launching your career?

The best thing about the graduate program was having the chance to spend 8 months in 3 different business departments, and the experiences and networks I accumulated. I went into the graduate program not knowing how an organization works, but I came out of it with in depth knowledge about 3 functions, as well as all the other functions/departments they work with. Also learning how different departments view the business was instrumental to understanding how all our different perspectives contribute to us working together as a big team. For example, sales and marketing both work at the customer-facing side of the business, and it is through their different interactions with customers that we can gain deep insights into how to best bring a product to market. I think this is valuable knowledge to take with me as I launch my career.

What project/work have you been most excited by since starting at Thermo Fisher?

One thing that surprised me and made me excited is that as a graduate, you get many opportunities to work on business-critical projects that really do matter. I remember in my first 8 months of work, I produced a finance tool that is still frequently used in the company today. During the process, I collaborated with colleagues in other functions, consulted seniors and managers about the tool, and finally presented it to the commercial team.

Meet Thomas Steel, 2020 Cohort

Thomas, tell us about your experience with the Leadership Program and what it involves?

I was first placed in our product management rotation where I was able to put into use what I learnt at university about business strategy, planning and marketing to execute on the goals of a line of products.

I then rotated into the Quality and Regulatory Affairs team where I was involved with large process transformation projects aimed at improving our quality management systems, as well as being exposed to the pathway to market highly regulated products.

I then was fortunate to do an extra month long project with our customer service team to stream line our ordering workflow before I was placed in my final rotation in Finance where I partnered with our business unit leaders to forecast sales, track performance and set budgets for 2022.

The experience of a rotation-based program is second to none at Thermo Fisher Scientific. Where other grad programs that are stream based focus on training you in one particular niche of work, my colleagues and I were fortunate to get exposure to a diversity of roles, giving us a breadth of understanding of the business end-to-end and allowing us to decide the area of work we are best suited for a future career.

How has the graduate program supported you in launching your career?

The graduate program at Thermo Fisher Scientific is designed around supporting our development and leadership, so throughout the whole experience I have received weekly catch ups with my various line managers, mentorship and frequent touchpoints with our country senior leadership team, a supportive network of graduate colleagues to bounce ideas off and dedicated sessions on leadership and work styles.

I have been very fortunate to have secured a role in product management post program and since having identified that as an area of interest, the dedicated talent management team has worked with me closely to create a career plan, set goals throughout my rotations to gain exposure and develop core competencies that would allow me to perform in the role.

What makes the company culture unique?

One of the main things that drew me to Thermo Fisher Scientific when I first interviewed, was how the passion for science and drive to support our customers doing cutting edge work, was really in the forefront of all the work that was done as a company. The Company lives and breathes their 4i values of Integrity, Intensity, Innovation and Involvement which forms the backbone for our culture and has created a team that everyone can be very proud to work for. Whether it is through our innovation in the form of cutting edge COVID response products, or integrity in the form of ethical business and continual support for colleagues through the pandemic, or involvement with social causes and charities, working at the company feels like you are contributing to something important in society.

Meet Sabine Audigé, 2020 Cohort

Sabine, tell us about your experience with the Leadership Program and what it involves?

I had my rotations in Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs (QARA), Sales and Marketing.
Each rotation had a mix of cross-functional projects and day-to-day tasks, providing variety and the opportunity to learn about the functions I integrated, lead meaningful projects and contribute to the team goals.

I recently transitioned into a permanent role as a Regulatory Affairs Specialist, where I work to ensure Thermo Fisher's products are compliant with the relevant regulatory requirements.

How has the graduate program supported you in launching your career?

The graduate program allowed me to explore different business areas, which helped determine where my interests lie. Each rotation drew on a slightly different set of skills and experience, and challenged me in different ways – I am glad some rotations put me out of my comfort zone as I surprised myself by how much I enjoyed it after the initial discomfort, and how much I learnt from those moments.

My experience in each rotation also allowed me to understand how each function works together towards serving our customers. I was able to gain deeper insights in each rotation as I saw the same processes through a different lens. These insights are now invaluable to working effectively with the business in my permanent role.

What are some of the perks and benefits of working at Thermo Fisher?

To me, a big part of what makes work enjoyable is the people – and I've had the chance to meet really amazing people at Thermo Fisher. From the other graduates in the program, my program and rotation managers, and all the colleagues I've met or worked with, I've found the whole Thermo Fisher team driven, friendly, and helpful.

I've also been struck by the power of working together towards a mission that is put into action every day. I was a bit dubious to start, but soon found that the Thermo Fisher mission of "enabling our customer to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer" is not just what we say, it's what we do.

Thermo Fisher Scientific

Meet Lawrence Power, 2020 Cohort

Lawrence, tell us about your experience with the Leadership Program and what it involves?

In the graduate program I had the opportunity to rotate between three different departments including sales, finance, and technical service.  This unique experience allowed me to build my foundational knowledge of commercial science as well as build a strong network across various functions which promoted an environment of self-learning supported with a robust development program.

The work within each rotation was unique, often blending a mix of daily tasks with larger project work which promotes collaboration with cross-functional teams including the senior leadership teams. This blended approach not only built the skills required to exceed in any role but also built the various soft skills required to deliver results for business-critical projects.

How has the graduate program supported you in launching your career?

The graduate program has allowed me to find my passion within a commercial organization and has also provided me the opportunity to build the career pathway for the future. The program has enabled me to build a strong network both locally & globally which is complemented by a range of technical skills required to exceed in a commercial organization.

What tips can you share to prospective graduates going through the application or recruitment process with us?

The application & interview experience at Thermo Fisher Scientific is one of the best I have experienced.  Throughout the process, the recruiting team and leadership teams are welcoming and do the upmost to make each candidate feel welcome. Be yourself and be comfortable with your own personal experiences and willingly share them. Remember, you were selected for a reason, the team is excited to understand your own personal experience and how you could be a great fit for the organisation.
