The City of Yarra has a proud history of environmental action and leadership. Yarra was one of the first local governments in the world to declare a climate emergency, recognising urgent action is required by all, and one of the first to develop a Climate Emergency Plan. Yarra Council has a significant role to play in effectively communicating with and bringing people together and enabling them to be active citizens creating change.

To enable and support our community to act on the climate emergency we are seeking a candidate who is enthusiastic about community mobilisation and engagement to:

  • Lead the design and delivery of Council’s climate emergency communications to engage more community members through enhanced messaging, campaigns and other support to take climate action,

  • Design and deliver specific climate emergency engagement, behaviour change and mobilisation initiatives (including events) to increase long-term buy-in and action across the municipality, and

  • Work in partnership with the community, key partners and stakeholders, supporting action on the climate emergency, and actively participate in joint sustainability projects.

The climate emergency is fast-paced, growing global movement with local councils at the forefront of action. We are seeking a passionate candidate who has relevant understanding and experience in developing and implementing community sustainability campaigns and projects, strong communications skills, and a demonstrated ability to undertake complex projects with many stakeholders.

The role sits in the Sustainability Unit within the Planning and Place Making division.
