Treasury Internship Program

About the program

We offer internship opportunities to students currently enrolled at university, in or approaching their final year of studies, who are or will be pursuing honours, a masters or PhD in Economics.

As an intern at Treasury, you will work on challenging and impactful policies that help shape the Australian economic landscape and contribute to the broader work of the organisation.

Through real work opportunities our program provides you with the chance to:

• begin your Australian Public Service career
• develop strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• develop your knowledge of economics and financial markets through meaningful work in your field of study

• complete your internship flexibly over a 12 month period at a competitive casual hourly rate of $36.76 per hour

What we’re looking for

We are seeking students who are passionate about helping to shape Australian’s economic framework.

If you are a university student who:

• is currently enrolled in, or approaching your final year of study in Economics or Econometrics and is, or will be pursuing an honours, masters or PhD in Economics
• has highly developed written and oral communication skills, strong analytical and people capabilities
• can demonstrate skills in influence, initiative
• can act with honesty, fairness and respect
• brings a fresh perspective to help us shape Treasury as the government’s lead economic adviser.

Ted Evans Scholar

On completion of this program one intern will be selected as the Ted Evans Scholar. They will be supported to undertake further study in Economics at the honours, masters or PhD level.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Treasury’s Internship Program, you will need to meet the following requirements:

• be an Australian citizen
• currently be enrolled at university in your penultimate year, or final year of studies where you will be pursuing an honours, masters or PhD in Economics
• have performed well over the course of your studies
• be able to complete the internship placement in the Treasury offices in either Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne
• be willing to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance on acceptance into the program
• be willing to undergo any police, character, health or other checks required.

How to apply

To help you with your application here are a few things you should know.

Step 1: What to include in your application

Before you start your application, make sure you’re eligible to apply by reading the eligibility criteria above.

If you meet the criteria, your application must include:

• your resume
• confirmation of your current university studies (this can be in the form of your academic transcript)
• a response to the application question.

Step 2: Submit your application

Submit applications through the Treasury online careers portal before the application closing date.

Applications for our internship program open Monday 19 June and close on Sunday 30 July 2023.

Step 3: Shortlisting

Shortlisted applicants will be notified by mid August 2023.

Step 4: Online video and reference check

If you have been shortlisted, you’ll be invited to undertake a one-way video responding to the supplied questions.

Following review of your video, your referees may be contacted. When selecting your referees, please nominate a referee that can comment on your work, skills and capabilities as a team member.

Step 5: Informal interview

You may be invited to participate in an informal virtual interview. Interviews are expected be held at the end of August 2023.

Step 6: Outcomes advised

Successful candidates will be offered an intern position in a division in Treasury. Placements will be determined closer to the commencement of the 2024 Treasury Internship Program, with the start date to be negotiated.

Unsuccessful candidates will have the opportunity to request feedback on their application.
