Located near West Wyalong in central New South Wales, Cowal is a residential site where we encourage our people to live nearby and enjoy the close-knit communities and lifestyles of the surrounding areas.

Your Benefits

We offer a comprehensive range of benefits to support your transition and enhance your experience throughout the program. Flights or reimbursement of travel expenses are provided at the beginning and end of the program. Residential housing is provided and subsidized, and transport to site is arranged for you, and you will be fully equipped with all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure your safety and comfort on the job. Candidates who successfully complete the vacation program will be fast-tracked into our graduate program.

This is a 12-week residential program running from December to February, on a roster of 5 days on 2 days off and 4 days on 3 days off. 

Our Vacation Program offers you the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally through a range of enriching experiences, including:

• Gaining hands-on experience through on-the-job learning
• Taking ownership of real projects with meaningful impact
• Receiving mentorship from experienced technical leaders
• Participating in operational and personal development training

About the role

The purpose of this role is to gain exposure to technical and operational aspects of an open pit mine including but not limited to, Mine Planning, Drill & Blast, Mine Design and Business Improvement projects.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Undertaking a specific Business Improvement Project as delegated by the Senior Mining Engineer
• Working in the Open Pit team alongside Mining Engineers and gaining experience in mine planning, design, dump staging strategies, drill and blast engineering, and business improvement
• Gaining hands-on experience with mining software such as Deswik and ShotPlus
• Observing interactions between the Open Pit Team and other departments including Operations, Geotech, Geology, Maintenance, and Processing
• Presenting to Superintendents and the Senior Leadership Team on placement experience, project outcomes, and improvement opportunities
• Contributing to the development and implementation of effective dump design and staging strategies
• Supporting drill and blast engineering tasks to optimize operational efficiency and safety
• Complying with Evolution Mining and Cowal Gold Operation’s site-specific Safety and Health management systems

About you

The ideal candidate is currently enrolled in a degree such as Mining Engineering, Science (Mining), Engineering Science (Mining Engineering), or Civil Engineering. Ideally you will have some experience with relevant software and systems through studies or placements. You should demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively across verbal, written, numerical, and graphical formats. You will be able to uphold high work standards, build strong relationships with peers and leaders, and work independently to meet personal and team goals. A valid manual driver’s licence and willingness to live and work remotely are essential for this role.
