Why should I choose to be an Adviser at the Fair Work Ombudsman?

The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) is Australia’s workplace regulator. The role of the FWO is to promote harmonious, productive, cooperative, and compliant workplace relations in Australia. We do this by providing education, assistance, advice and guidance to employers and employees. In the last financial year, the FWO recovered $532 million in wages for 384,000 workers.

Working as a Fair Work Adviser at the FWO, you will be on the phone in a fast-paced contact centre environment advising and assisting the Australian public every day. You will be helping a diverse range of employees and employers by helping them to understand workplace rights, entitlements, and responsibilities.

What is most important to succeed in this role is a desire to help people, good communication skills and willingness to learn.

“My favourite thing about my role is trying to make a difference and helping people understand their rights and entitlements. Every day I am providing information which helps support the public”. Fair Work Adviser, 4 years’ experience.

We could write for days about what makes being a part of the team at FWO a special opportunity. However, it really comes down to three key factors. Conditions, career and culture.

Your Conditions

  • Salary starts from $69,365 with annual wage increases built into our EBA
  • 15.4% super - Compound interest is real!
  • 37.5 hour working week with flex time regularly available
  • 4 weeks annual leave plus an additional paid annual close down between Christmas and New Year
  • Able to access flexible working arrangements including part time and working from home

Your Career

As an Adviser, you will develop valuable skills and experience within a reputable APS agency for a rewarding career within the APS.

As an Adviser you will:

  • receive comprehensive training on Australia’s workplace relations system and gain invaluable technical knowledge
  • gain skills in researching and interpreting legislation
  • develop advanced communications skills including the ability to adapt your communication methods to suit different customers and scenarios
  • be supported to constantly learn through our extensive coaching program
  • be making a real difference to people's lives in the Australian community

The knowledge and skills gained in the Adviser role can lead to positive career progression. This includes not only within the Fair Work Infoline as a Coach or Team Leader, but across the FWO. Past Advisers have become Fair Work Inspectors, Communications officers, and joined the FWO’s Behavioural Economics and Education or Data teams.

“It’s such a supportive environment. This is the first job I’ve had where I do feel, not only that I’m safe and secure in this role but that investment is from both sides. It feels like FWO wants us to do well in this role and continue to invest in its employees”. Fair Work Adviser, 10 months experience.

Our Culture

You can expect to work in a supportive work environment where we value diversity and provide an inclusive workplace culture. In our 2022 APS Census results, 85% of FWO Advisers felt their workplace supports and actively promotes an inclusive workplace culture and 90% felt supported by their immediate manager when they made a mistake.

At the FWO, we recognise that having an inclusive workplace is good for everyone. Research undertaken by Diversity Council Australia tells us that all employees perform better, feel valued, and report higher job satisfaction if they work in an inclusive organisation which values diversity. FWO has been recognised by the Diversity Council Australia as an inclusive employer.

Having a diverse workforce helps us meet the diverse needs of the Australian public. We encourage and welcome applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and mature age people. All qualified applicants will be considered.

“I love getting an insight into different cultures, sharing their celebrations and getting to 'peek behind the curtain' into a world that while seemingly is very different to the one I grew up in, fundamentally is surprisingly similar. Australians should be proud of our strong multiculturalism; it makes our country great – and we at the FWO should be proud to see this reflected in our workforce”.  Fair Work Adviser, 12 months’ experience.

Our ideal Adviser

One of our Advisers recently described their ideal colleague: “There is no one-sized fits all approach to this job – my colleagues have different ways of working, some people are more straightforward, and others naturally build rapport really quickly. If you’re friendly, able to comprehend questions, read, and understand legislation and quickly adapt to communicate for a range of audiences then you can be successful. You need to be able to portray empathy but be decisive when providing information to help resolve workplace issues. - Having the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly both over the phone and in writing is vital.”
