Jess

JESSICA GAHAN

My first year working as a graduate accountant at Moore Australia was an extremely exciting time in my life. I had looked forward to working in a ‘fancy building’ in a corporate setting and getting to dress up every day for as long as I can remember.

My time as a graduate definitely didn’t disappoint and most of my days looked a little like this.

7am  - Wake up

Living in Milton had massive bonuses including being able to wake up at 7am. This was extremely early for me and took some adjustment but others in the office have a much longer commute so 7am is actually a sleep-in!

8am - Catch bus (or Uber)

Another bonus was that the bus stop was basically at my front door with about a 15-20 minute commute into the city. However, on those days when the outfit just wasn’t coming together, an Uber was my saving grace – if I got in the Uber by 8.15, I could still walk through the door on time! Talk about living my best city life.

8.30am - Manage Workflow

Typically, I would spend the first half an hour in the day looking through my emails and Job Manager in MYOB to determine my workflow for the day and work that needed to be completed. From early on, I had a large amount of autonomy and responsibility for managing my workflow which meant ensuring I was keeping track of jobs that needed to be completed and juggling multiple priorities.

9am - Complete Jobs

Most of the day is spent completing as many jobs as you can to help the team meet lodgement deadlines for clients!

9.30am - Coffee break

Most people in the office normally head downstairs or across the road to the variety of cafes within walking distance for their morning coffee. Not being able to stand coffee myself meant I saved $5 every day and made my English Breakfast for free in the staff kitchen! Tea is always accompanied by at least 2 Arnott’s biscuits from the kitchen stash – maybe even a banana if I’m feeling healthy!

10am - Team workflow meeting

Our team comes together every Monday to discuss each team members workflow and go through current lodgement statistics and goals. It is a good opportunity to discuss any priorities, problems or movements throughout the week and have direct access to every team member including your director.

10.30am - Morning Tea

Every second Wednesday of the month, the entire office comes together for morning tea to celebrate the birthdays of the month and go through any important announcements. Sausage rolls always go down a treat.

11.30am - Reviews with Principal

As a graduate in the Superannuation division, your main priority is completing as many jobs as you can. Completing a lot of jobs also means a lot of reviews! After my Principal had reviewed my work, we would always have a quick chat in his office to go through all the review points, identify areas where additional training was required and just generally discuss the truly riveting world that is Super compliance!

1pm - Lunch

Our team always tries to take lunch at 1pm – it’s sometimes a struggle to make it through but it means when you come back at 2pm there is only 3 hours of work left! I would like to say I brought my lunch to work every day but there are just so many places to get food, it’s too hard to resist temptation. Fridays are a personal favourite as most of our team head out together for lunch and sometimes a sneaky beverage!

3pm - Grad/Mentor meeting

Once a week, my mentor and I caught up for our Mentor Meeting where we would recap the week, discuss new things that were learnt and areas that still needed further development. This was an excellent opportunity to raise any issues that you didn’t get a chance to during the week and keep track of your progress.

4.30pm - End of Month drinks

On the last Friday of the month, the entire office is treated to drinks and nibbles in the boardroom – the perfect opportunity to celebrate your hard work

5pm - Home time

Luckily, my house was only about 2.5km from the office meaning I could run home in the afternoon to avoid the congestion in the city. If I ran fast enough, I could even beat the bus. It’s important to make time for yourself during the busy week and exercising while getting home was the ideal way for me to unwind! The end of trip facilities in the basement of our building make it extremely easy if you want to run or ride to and from work.

NSW - A Day in the Life

Moore Australia

jade

A Day in the Life – Jade Davis

A day in my working life has changed a lot since I started with Moore as a Graduate Accountant over 6 years ago in my first accounting role. I chose Moore as I was looking for the perfect spot in the middle, not a firm too big where you lose the connection with your clients but big enough to still be challenged every day. I got what I was looking for!

On days I work in the Sydney CBD I leave the house at 7:30AM, I have a long commute and am not a fan of idle time and I make the best of the situation by responding to client emails on the train with my laptop before arriving at the office at 8:45AM.

Positive changes have been born from the effects of the pandemic and one of those is the increased ability to work for home. I work from home 2 days a week and on those days I usually start work at 8:00AM. It allows me a little more time to myself without effecting my working hours. On days I work from home I’ve had a more relaxed start to the day and start responding to emails at 8:00AM.

Next I review my ever changing to do list and adjust it with new priorities accordingly. As a manager the day you had planned may look very different from the work you need to complete that day.

Everyday my team catches up at 10:00AM for our daily call. It is a short 5-10 minute catch up over Skype where our team members advise the tasks they will be working on today. I mention any urgent tasks that have come up and make sure everyone is set for the day. It’s also great to see each other’s faces every morning as we aren’t all in the same place every day, even if it is on a screen! Most days my role involves:

  • Responding to client queries
  • Review of year-end financial statements and income tax returns prepared by the team for a range of entities including companies, trusts, partnerships, individuals and SMSFs
  • Research and advice for clients
  • Training and supervision of team members
  • Meetings with clients

Lunch is always different for me! Sometimes I bring lunch which is generally leftovers from the night before. If I need to, I can eat this at my desk while getting that important task done – or meeting up with the team in the lunchroom. Our team likes to catch up for lunch out every couple of weeks. Its great for team bonding and nice break from the office.

The partner I work for is not a morning person, so it’s best to catch up with him in the afternoon on any projects we are working on together. This is generally for larger clients or research tasks/special projects.

I normally work until 6:30PM and like to listen to a good podcast on the way home. If the weather is nice and I’ve been working from home that day I love to squeeze a nice evening walk in with my husband before dinner and winding down for the night.

VIC - Internships

Moore Australia

Our Summer Vacation Program at Moore Australia (VIC) offers a genuine experience of life at our firm to penultimate year students in the hope they will become our graduates the following year. The experience we offer includes working with all levels of the business including directors, client contact and an array of training opportunities, as well as a variety of social events and celebrations to be involved in that give students an insight into our firm culture.

Our students are with us for a total of six weeks with their time split into two periods – one prior to the Christmas break and one after. For each period we have students in our Audit & Assurance division and in our Business Advisory division. Those in Audit & Assurance during Period 1, will rotate into Business Advisory in Period 2, and vice versa. This will ensure that all our vacation students gain experience in both divisions.

We check in with our vacationers after each period to receive their feedback and ensure the program is meeting their expectations. We also check in with our managers at the end of each period and have them complete an assessment form for their vacationer. At the end of the program each vacationer completes a feedback survey and self-assessment form, and indicates to us which division they prefer to be placed in if they are successful in gaining a place in our Graduate Program.

VIC - Application Process

Moore Australia

Our Recruitment process is three stages long. In your initial application we ask you to provide a copy of your resume, a cover letter and your academic transcript. From there, the next stage of the process is a video interview. We will ask you a few questions and you will get to record your answers. If you are successful, you will then be asked to attend an interview with some of your team mates. We want to make our recruitment process as engaging as possible, with lots of opportunity for you to ask as many questions as possible, and learn about us.

WHY MOORE AUSTRALIA?

Having previously worked in a smaller practice in the suburbs, the opportunity to join a larger firm in the city was what initially attracted me to Moore Australia. Knowing that Moore Australia was part of an international network made it clear that I was going to get exposure to a wide range of clients that wasn’t previously available to me. After having the opportunity to speak with some staff members of Moore Australia during the interview process, it was clear that the firm had a great balance between work and social culture that makes it a great place to work at.

HOW DID MOORE SUPPORT YOU THROUGH GRADUATE TRAINING AND CAANZ?

Although I did not start as a graduate with Moore Australia, my experience with other staff members having started as graduates it is clear that the firm offers a wide range of support to their staff members. The opportunity for graduates completing their GradDipCA to attend Master Classes and fortnightly training with senior staff at Moore Australia are just some of the key offerings available to staff.

WHAT INFLUENCE DID MOORE TRAINING HAVE ON YOUR CAREER?

Joining the firm as a senior accountant I was very confident in my skills and abilities in the Business Advisory sector, however after a few months with the firm it was clear that there was more to the world of Business Advisory than I realised. The training that Moore Australia makes available to staff members gives you an opportunity to get experience in a number of topics that you don’t run into in your everyday work life.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR ROLE?

My favourite thing about my role is the wide range of clients that I work with on a daily basis, which range from small family groups to large companies turning over $100m in revenue on a yearly basis. With this wide range of clients, no two days are the same.

ANY TIPS FOR APPLICANTS?

Aside from the interesting and challenging work, I have made friendships that I will cherish for a long time.

Be open to all opportunities that come your way when you are starting out as a graduate and ask as many questions as possible. Nobody in the firm is going to say no to someone he is keen to learn and get better.

A Day in the Life

Moore Australia

Jess

JESSICA, QLD / NNSW

Degree: Bachelor of Commerce

The end of trip facilities in the basement of our building make it extremely easy if you want to run or ride to and from work.

alice

Alice - Victoria

Degree: Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Accounting and Finance) – Deakin University

6.45AM

My alarm goes off and I snooze it for another 10 minutes – getting up ‘early’ is not my strong suit. I get ready, pack by bag and have a quick breakfast before heading out the door.

7.50AM

I work in Geelong, so I have a quick 10-minute drive into the Geelong CBD and a 15-minute walk to the office. I’ll listen to a podcast or audio book as I walk to the office.

8.30AM

My first task for the day is to check my emails for any messages that have come in overnight and create a to-do list with my priorities for the day. Twice a week my team have a workflow meeting where we go through the work we each have on, our priorities for the next few days, any work we need to request from clients and any information we are waiting on from clients. These meetings help us to manage the capacity of each team member and ensure that jobs get completed on time.

9.00AM

Working in the Business Advisory Services division, my team and I work on a wide range of tasks for clients. This includes – preparing financial statements and income tax returns; business activity statements and other tax lodgements; periodic management reporting; budgeting; risk advisory engagements; tax advice and other advisory pieces that arise. In the morning, I try to complete any smaller tasks that have arisen such as researching a query that a client has email about and drafting a response, preparing business activity statements, or preparing information for a client or my manager. If I have any tasks outstanding from the day before, I will try and complete these in the morning.

10.00AM

Around 10am our team usually gets a coffee and snack from the office kitchen and has a chat. People from all different divisions tend to be in the kitchen around the same time, so there’s always someone to talk to. Every fortnight I have an hour of graduate training facilitated by one of the firm’s directors or managers. These sessions cover topics that are relevant to the areas we encounter in practice when doing our work, and there’s always opportunities for us to ask questions about areas we are unsure about.

11.00AM

For the rest of the workday, I tend to focus on a bigger task. A core part of our work as a Business Advisory team is to prepare financial statements and income tax returns for our clients, so this tends to be what I focus on for a big part of my day. We have clients that operate businesses of different sizes and industries, so it’s interesting working on the accounting and tax issues that arise for different types of entities. In addition, I will often be involved in different advisory projects, so I may spend my day drafting a report or letter of advice on a certain tax issue or other advisory matters such as risk management.

12.30PM

Lunch time – our team loves to eat out for lunch so we will often be found at the Japanese rice bar nearby or grabbing a Parmi at the restaurant next door. On other days, I tend to eat in the office and then go for a walk.

3.00PM

Coffee catch-up with my manager. Each month all team members have an informal catch up with their manager. In my catch ups my manager and I tend to chat about how I am going, what work I have on/coming up and progress I have made towards my personal development goals.

4.30PM

I check my workflow to make sure all urgent tasks are done, and update my manager on where tasks are at if necessary. If any emails have come in during the day that require an urgent response, I will draft a response.

5.00PM

Generally, I log off for the day around 5pm. During busier times, such as around lodgement due dates or when urgent tasks need to be completed, I may work for an extra hour or two. After work I head home for dinner and walk the dog or go to cricket practice/touch footy. I also try and get half an hour to an hour of CA study done, before unwinding in front of the TV.
