What I love most about Reckitt?
Fast-paced and action-packed days. You will never find yourself bored in any of your Grad rotations. As soon as you do start to feel that – expect to rotate onto a new role! Each time I started to feel comfortable in my role, the business took it as an opportunity to promote me onto the next role.
What has been the most challenging?
University to work transition. You will essentially be owning a business with real life implications, not just getting a mark. We work hard at Reckitt, and it certainly can consume a lot of your early career and life. The key is to ensure you set your own boundaries with work-life balance!
What have you enjoyed the most?
My Kitchen Rules TV shoots, New Product launches, actually getting to see your hard work come to life in store! We also tend to hire an extremely diverse set of people – which in turn promotes challenging the status quo and continuously trying to innovate.
What would you say to anyone joining Reckitt?
Congrats on getting the role! You deserve it! There’s a reason why you were hired, so own it and you will see the results. My key 4 pieces of advice:
- You’re young, now is the time to put the energy into your career.
- If you aren’t happy with something, or think there is a better way – then find the better way and own it, don’t just keep complaining about the process
- Sponge everything, you have so much to learn. You will enter a business with some of the most intelligent people in the industry, they likely know more than you – so listen and learn.
- Don’t rush to your next role for the sake of progression – it isn’t important. Refining your skills, gaining breadth of experience, and becoming an expert on your account/brand need to be your priority. If you do this, progression will naturally come (faster than you expect it)
Rifka Samsudeen
University: University of Sydney
Degree: Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies) (Majors – Accounting and Government & International Relations)
Time at Reckitt: 6 months
Current role: National Account Executive, Woolworths
What I love most about Reckitt?
The coolest part of being the National Account Executive is definitely getting to trial products before their launch - think all the newest fragrances and innovation that comes to life through Reckitt. Afterall, you have to know the product to be able to sell it! I also love that across the year we have different activations for our brands that I get to help organise and communicate to shoppers.
What has been the most challenging?
I would say the pace of our work can sometimes become stressful. Everything at Reckitt moves so quickly as we pride ourselves on our speed to market. However, this also means that the working environment has to keep up that pace which can be quite daunting. Reckitt is also very performance led so if you’re a bit of a perfectionist, like myself, you sometimes have to let go of taking care of the little things to focus on the larger targets we’re attempting to achieve.
What does your day to day look like?
The day-to-day involves a fair amount of data analysis and report building. This can range from reporting daily sales performances to more in-depth category deep-dives. It means you can truly understand customer decisions and what drives their purchasing behaviours. Outside that, you get to be involved in creating amazing in-store activations which involve meetings with our Brand teams as well as any external stakeholders to bring our vision to life. We’re given a great level of autonomy and responsibility over smaller accounts which mean you get to engage with Woolworths buyers and have the opportunity to really raise your profile within the industry.
What would you say to anyone joining Reckitt?
- Firstly, get involved in absolutely everything that you can on campus – becoming a bit of a yes-person infinitely benefitted my journey through uni.
- Secondly, don’t hesitate to speak up and speak out – you’ll need to become your own champion when you work so take time to recognise your efforts and successes.
- Lastly, know when you’ve reached your limits – you’re allowed to take breaks and enjoy being young!
