Volunteer FEAST Assistant - Townsville

FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Training) is an OzHarvest developed program designed to teach kids about sustainability, food waste and nutrition.

With fun and interactive activities FEAST invites students to explore the role food plays in our everyday lives and wider society, whilst also considering our ecological footprint. The program is presented within a beautiful classroom inquiry-based unit, with the kids cooking in the classroom and learning by doing!

The program is focused on detailed lesson planning tools and recipes that align with Australian Curriculum. Teachers at each school run the program, with the help of volunteers for the cooking component. All of the recipes can be made in class and do not require a kitchen, making the cooking and food education components accessible to all children and school communities.

FEAST relies on many people for it to work to its full potential and the volunteer body is one of the most important facets of the program – we could not do it without you!

Your commitment to us: You'll help the teachers set up, facilitate and clean up at each in-classroom cooking session with their students.

In order to achieve our aim, we need people who are not only enthusiastic about making a difference but who are also able to make a genuine commitment.

The FEAST program runs for a period of 10 weeks (duration of a school term).

We require corporate FEAST assistants to commit a minimum 6 weeks (1 day a week for 1-3 hours) for the practical component of the FEAST program. Practical sessions will usually occur on the same day and time, during school hours, at various schools throughout the region.

This allows your relationship with the children to develop and also makes it easier for you to be comfortable in your environment. It also helps with planning.

It is universal practice to undertake a Working with Children Check, and so holding a current Blue Card is an essential requirement of the program.

If you have an interest in sustainability, nutrition, education and food - this is the role for you!
