About this opportunity 

This is a permanent role starting in 2024 for a graduate to join an independent, values and purpose driven consultancy. You’ll currently be studying, or recently completed qualifications in economics/econometrics, mathematics/statistics or fields which include a strong quantitative component alongside policy or social science. Honours or post-graduate qualifications will be viewed favourably.

A bit about you 

You will be interested and demonstrate as many as possible of the following characteristics:

  • A passion for how cities and regions function, what contributes to an economy that creates better places for people and the planet and an understanding of government and the public policy process.
  • The ability to take an analytical approach to policy issues by forming hypotheses and critically analysing data to synthesise insights and recommendations.
  • Experience in the use of software packages commonly used for data analysis (e.g., MS Excel, R, Python, SQL, etc). Examples of their use in economic research or policy analysis contexts will be advantageous.
  • Experience in the use of spatial data and analysis/visualisation techniques.
  • The ability to communicate and collaborate, in both verbal and written forms, with others from a range of disciplines/backgrounds/etc.
  • A desire and aptitude to learn new concepts and techniques, both autonomously and within a team.

What you’ll do

As a member of the SGS consulting team, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a range of projects for local, state and federal government, and other organisations that shape Australia’s cities and regions. Types of projects you can expect to work on are:

  • Analysis of spatial data to inform social, environmental, and economic policies across Australia’s cities, regions, and communities.
  • Econometric modelling and forecasting to advise transport and community infrastructure investment.
  • Internal research and publications which contribute to the public interest such as rental affordability and economic wellbeing.
