Who you'll work with

The Office of the Auditor-General is responsible for VAGO’s audit quality framework, financial reporting advisory and legal compliance functions and supports both Financial Audit and Parliamentary Reports and Services divisions. 

It is responsible for providing auditing technical advice and maintaining financial audit methodology in the conduct of audits of financial statements, estimated financial statements, performance statements, acquittal audits and all other types of audits VAGO provides audit or assurance opinions on. 

It is also responsible for performing quality reviews of VAGO engagement leaders and contracted Audit Service Providers and providing technical auditing training to Financial Audit and Parliamentary Reports and Services divisions as required.

What you’ll do

Audit Quality and Financial Reporting Advisory interns are enthusiastic, collaborative employees who are motivated by the challenge of promoting continuous improvement in the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office and the public sector. They directly contribute to supporting the delivery of financial audits and business improvement projects as required.

Interns will work alongside highly skilled professionals in an innovative work environment. They will work on projects such as maintaining our audit quality framework, audit methodology, audit policies and audit training. 

These opportunities will develop their understanding of the Australian auditing and assurance standards, risk-based auditing and their research and writing skills. This experience will provide a solid foundation on which to embark on a successful career in financial auditing and other assurance work. 

Upon completion of their internship, they are encouraged to make an application for a graduate position in our graduate program.


Key responsibilities

Operations

  • Undertake research and assist in drafting audit technical policies, procedures guidance, technical consultations 
  • Contribute to the design and development of technical training materials 
  • Project support for our audit quality assurance programs
  • Contribute to operational and business improvement projects 

Reporting 

Maintain records and content in VAGO’s key systems 

Compliance 

Meet corporate governance requirements by ensuring work is delivered in accordance with legislative and policy requirements.

What you've studied

Qualifications and experience

At the time of internship, Interns must:

  • be in 3rd, 4th or honours year of tertiary studies in commerce, accounting or audit related fields; and
  • have completed (or be completing) auditing and financial reporting subjects as part of their qualification
  • be comfortable using the basic functions of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Power Point. 

What else you need to know

When not working from home, this role is based at 35 Collins Street, Melbourne

  • Travel to various work locations throughout Victoria and Australia may be required
  • VAGO employees are required to comply with public sector requirements for ethical conduct, conflict of interest, Occupational Health & Safety, Diversity in the Workplace, the Human Rights Charter and Equal Opportunity principles
  • All VAGO employees are required to undergo a criminal record check and complete a Declaration of Independence on commencing employment and periodically thereafter
