What will I do?

A graduate Civil/Structural engineer in any industry is typically responsible for assisting in the design, analysis, and construction of buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. Some of the duties of a graduate Civil/Structural engineer may include: 

  • Assisting in the design and analysis of structures, including calculating loads and stresses, selecting materials, and developing construction plans.
  • Under supervision prepare engineering drawings, plans, and specifications using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Conducting site investigations to evaluate soil conditions, topography, and other factors that may impact construction.
  • Assisting in the preparation of cost estimates, project schedules, and other project management tasks.
  • Participating in site visits and inspections to ensure construction is progressing as planned and that safety regulations are being followed.
  • Coordinating with other engineers, project managers, and contractors to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  • Conducting research and analysis on new materials, methods, and techniques that could be used to improve the efficiency and safety of structural engineering projects.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Completed your Civil/Structural engineering degree by the end of 2023 or earlier.
  • Attention to detail: You will be responsible for creating detailed designs and specifications and must pay close attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and safety of the work.
  • Teamwork: Most engineering projects require collaboration and teamwork, so strong interpersonal and collaboration skills are essential
  • Adaptability: Engineering is a constantly evolving field, and as a graduate engineer you should be able to adapt to new technologies and techniques.
  • Problem solving: Engineering often requires finding creative solutions to complex problems. Good critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills are highly valued.
  • Communication skills: The ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner is important for a graduate engineer. This includes the ability to write reports, give presentations, and explain complex technical concepts to non-technical colleagues.
