Design and User Experience Internship/Vacation Program for Undergraduates
Design refers to the planning that is used as a base for the making of an object, product or system. The purpose of an internship would be to help students gain real work experience while learning how design and business work together in a working environment. All design interns can expect to listen, brainstorm, observe, create perspectives, explore and define design opportunities, help define strategy, create tangible design expressions, and communicate your ideas.

Requirements
There is no required background to qualify as a UX designer and many UX designers have a different backgrounds, ranging from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Cognitive Psychology, Computer Science, Graphic Design, Technical Writing, Professional Communication, English, Philosophy and History.
However, there are technical skills that are required and they may include skills in:
- Adobe Creative Suit
- Corel Draw
- MS – Office
- HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript
- UI/UX project work experience
- Responsive Design
- Adaptive Design
- Photoshop
- Illustrator
- UAT
- A/B testing
- Multivariate testing etc.
What to Expect
With the design department being quite extensive, there are many roles a student can acquire. When it comes to the technology industry, many new job titles emerged that encompassed design such as user experience (UX) design. The benefits of an internship is that you have the opportunity to work in many roles, having a taste of what you might be doing in your future career and finding out which suits you best. As UX designers have different responsibilities and roles that make up the UX design team, the requirements and key activities for an internship vary. A few of the job roles that you might find yourself doing may include tasks like:
- Working with the UX design team and customers
- Build physical prototypes both low and high fidelity to evaluate, test and demonstrate
- Presenting UX concepts as sketches, site maps, personas, user journeys, wireframes and clickable prototypes
- Undertake user research
- Create designs for web, print and other media
Some of the tasks you may work on can be from the different subunits of a UX designer such as2:
- Project definition This requires you to talk with people inside and outside of the company who are interested in the project. You also need to learn their goals, motivations, concerns, requirements, and constraints. This is where you review the project definition to make sure that it makes sense and talk with project stakeholders to discuss about any concerns before working on the project
- Requirements gathering Talking with business owners or project/product managers that will be guiding the design and development of the project and then coming to a decision on the features and functions of the applications and how it would translate to the user interface
- User research Finding out the needs and concerns of the app and how they are in line with what has been discussed in requirements gathering by talking with people who will be using that app after its launch. It is also a good idea to ask for their input to see if there’s anything missing or to add on
- Information architecture (IA) The role of an information architect is generally used for a more content heavy website, focusing on the structure and hierarchy of the information on the website. The output of this stage includes wireframes of low fidelity to high fidelity.
- Interaction design This requires you to do sketching and wireframing with the goal of finding out key screens, UI elements, and flows between the screens or between other applications. Those who specialise in interaction design usually use tools like OmniGraffle, Axule, Balsamic, and even Illustrator and InDesign
- Usability testing This stage is to make sure a design helps users reach their goals as quickly as possible. While usability testing at an early stage is good to make sure you’re on the right track, it is better to have it done halfway through the project when the high-fidelity prototype is available to put in front of users and see which elements and/or interactions make sense
- Visual design The process of visual design is to focus on layout, colour, typography, and information design. The standard tool used in the industry is Photoshop, however you can also use Illustrator or other software that you’re comfortable with
- Prototyping / front-end development Code helps you with understanding the patterns in UI design and knowing HTML/CSS/JS would be a strong advantage in the industry. For many of the top jobs, it is even a requirement to know code
